Smoked fog lights?

I got some smoked headlights for my cobra a few months back. I love them, really don't wanna go back to clear. I am having trouble finding fog lights to match. With the headlights I bought some BOI smoked fogs, and they are crap. I can't keep them together. I still have the stockers, but the lenses are faded. I thought about tinting the stockers with some vht nite shades, but since they are aready hazy, I don't think that will turn out good. Any opinions on that? I know latemodelrestoration sell some smoked fog lights, they are not made by BOI. I have considered trying them, but really wanted a cheaper option (also afraid they will do the same as my BOI). I have considered using the fog lights from a 03 GMC Envoy, but then run into the problem of cost and getting them to match. I would probably use the VHT, but I have also found a vinyl sticker tint that would work on them. The Envoy setup is really what I want, but I really don't want to spend almost $200 on fog lights. Any suggestions/opinions on how to make this work? It's getting frustrating, I'm almost ready to say screw smoked lights and go back to stock, but I REALLY like the look. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I bought the smoked vinyl covers for mine...

I purchased smooth faced fog lenses/housing from I think 50resto but I can't remember.

Looked into those. I like them, but since the lights are cloudy underneath, it won't look right. I'm not buying cheapo lights again (altough $70 aint cheap). They don't make the vinyl like you have for my 96 cobra. Another place does sell them, but it is $50. I'm trying to find a cheaper way out. If I'm gonna spend $100+, I'm doing the Envoy swap. I can't stand spending that much on just the fogs, but will do if there is no other way. Any ideas? Really looking for ideas on tinting the stockers with VHT. I may just try it and see, but I also dont want to waste $20 if it won't work, I've already wasted $60 on the BOI ones, so money is a big concern. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to tell if they are cloudy or not once you put the vinyl overlay on them.

I'd like for it to be that way, but just not sure if it will be that easy. They don't make the vinyl overlay for a 96 Cobra. I have looked at the VHT Nite Shades, which should do the same. I think I can have then ship me a tint square, then trim it to fit, just not sure how well it will work. Any other thoughts on the tint over the cloudy lights? Thanks.

I bought the VHT to do my Cobra and can t ell you that stuff sucks. Looks ok when fresh but chips off very easily and when the lights are on they are very spoty even when its fresh. Cleans off with a dish sponge though :nice:
Get the vinyl or get smoked lenses though, I really dont reccomend the VHT.

I'd try the vinyl option first . . . it's cheap and if it works . . . nothing lost, you're done. If ya don't like the results, take the next step and go for the more expensive options . . . better than the other way around.

OH . . . and post some pics. I am doing my 92 GT in HOK Chameleon and want to see how the smoke lights look against the Mystic paint.

Thanks for the input, any more is greatly appreciated. Here are a few pics. Since I've had so many problems with the fogs, I don't have any good pics of it with them on. I also have removed the billet grille, front plate, and had th bumper repainted (this is shown in the pic). I have also got new corner bulbs that are chrome but still light up yellow, so there is no longer the yellow reflection in the corner light.

Yeah, the Sylvania bulbs rock! I have them in my Cobra and Mark VIII  Having a bluish chrome bulb when they are off looks much nicer IMO :nice:

The smoked head lights really fit well with your car and I kina like the way you fogs look now

Yea, I'm perfectly content with the look. However, the lens will not stay on. I bought some adheasive designed for emblems and plastic. I'd glue it and a week later the lens would pop off. I finally used some super glue because nothing else would work. The glue had a reaction with the plastic and now has the lens fogged over, and it won't come out. If that didn't happen, I would be leaving it the way it is. I am scared to try any other aftermarket fogs because of that issue. Latemodelrestoration has some smoked fogs that aren't made by BOI, started to try them but IDK.

So is the VHT that bad compared to the vinyl? I think I'm gonna try to smoke my stockers. I like the vht because I can do multiple coats to achieve the desired tint. With the vinyl, I'm stuck. I'm thinking that I will use VHT on the fogs, followed by a spray on clear coat. I may end up doing it darker than the headlights so that you can't tell the fogs are cloudy underneath. This will more than likely be a temporary solution, I will eventually do the Envoy swap and vinyl overlays to tint them. Do you guys think this will work (idea with stockers) and look decent? Thanks.

You need to do three coats to get a semi even coat. Three coats is the same as a 5% vinyl tint on them and they will look way better with the vinyl
