Vortech driveability

Hey guys
Got a 03 gt here with a newly installed vortech s-trim and I am having some driveability issues. At WOT and the track....the car is perfect, a little puff of smoke on this shifts, but hey I can deal.
When driving around town like a good little mustang, I get some bucking when lets say, I'm in third gear, 3k rpms, and other times too. I've been driving my friends procharged mach all week and it drives just as smooth as can be.

I'm also see some stalling when coming to stops. The idle will jump around a couple hundred rpms and then sometimes just die at a stop light.

Had a very reputable tuner do my tuning and I have pretty much done everything suggested to me: replace plugs, check for air leaks (which I can't any find by myself), adjusted the bypass valve correctly. A couple people have told me that my MAF is getting some "wash" or turbulance.
The sequence goes: air filter, SCT2400 maf, powerpipe then head unit.

If anyone has any kind of insight as to what I should take as my next step to solving the issue, please let me know, I would be very greatful. Or perhaps more info is needed from me on my setup or about the car's behavior. I understand I have modded the gt, but it seems like it should be alot more well behaved, it's not 600hp or anything.

sounds like the tuner tuned it perfect for WOT only. A lot of tuners do that and call it good and dont spend enuf time on the daily drivability of the tune. At least thats what i have dealt with in my experience. And ive also been to very "reputable tuners". Thats why i'm now driving 500 miles to get tuned perfectly by somebody that really knows their stuff.

Yeah that sounds wierd. Even with my car, its has an OLD tune on it where the timing is locked. SO its running low timing at idle and low cruise speeds compared to a tune that takes in account for when you are not WOT. So mine is pretty much tuned for WOT, but like I said, its an old school autologic chip that didnt have the technology they have now. But I cant say mine does that at all even with the wierd tune. Best bet would be to let them look it over I guess. Couldnt be something small you are missing. But I have no problems with my vortech at all

i have to agree with the people who think it's backflow. what bypass do you have? if it's the cheap plastic one Vortech gives you, it may need changed. make sure all the vacuum lines are connected.

I agree with this. I've seen too many people get an awsome tune only to find out the tuner didn't do much if anything for everyday driveability. If I was you I'd take it to a different reputable tuner and see if they can fix the tune issues becuase it sounds as if the guy now doesn't want to mess with it. He's just having you throw parts at it instead of really getting deep into the tune.

Fuel Pump is a single GT supercar pump.

I have the mini race valve.

Talked to tuner and daily driving was definitely accounted for. Aparently after a second look, my bypass valve is causing alot of MAF wash, so I am going to try a stock bosch, picked one up for real cheap. He tells me that its not that the mini race is moving too much air, its that its moving too much air at idle/part throttle and blowing into the inlet pipe and causing turbulence.

Bob Kurgan is awesome and I'm positive he tuned it for daily driving conditions as well. If this doesn't clear my problems up, he is going to take another look at it.

lol I think I need to make a progress thread, I have many more goodies I have purchased :)

Jimmy Larocca, right? I used to have an autologic/locked timing tune from him. Driveability wasn't that great, but the car ran awesome at the track with the locked timing.

you are exactly right....the stock bosch valve works great for anything under 14 lbs. i had the EXACT same problem with my car and i had the mini race too. my tuner(which was Lidio from Alternative Auto) said the same thing. it moves too much air. anytime i would cruise at 3 grand or above my car would surge and you could actually hear the mini race rapidly blowing off. :rolleyes: i put the stock bosch valve on and all gone. put it on and you will be all better. the mini race is ONLY needed for high horsepower/ high boost applications and actually causes more problems when used on our kind of setups.

ahh, gracias senior for your input. I have purchase a bosch valve and will update just as soon as I figure out how to tap into this giant hole where my mini race was lol.

How did you do it? or mind sending me a pic

lol....i had some spare pipe from my fmic so i just had my boss tig weld a one inch pipe on it and put in place of my bov pipe. you might have a different setup but mine was pretty easy actually. i had the mini race on top of the pipe before because it was so pretty but the bosch one is tucked in under the pipe lol :rolleyes:

ive got the mini race on my setup, but i have a blow thru setup, so the mini race works perfect for my application. I started off with the bosch bov and it was giving me a lot of probs with drivability so i switched to the mini race and all is well. It must make a big difference on if u are draw thru vs blow thru.

:nice: Yup it came from him haha. Well now that I think about it, the only thing I really notice at driving is if I cruise at like 2500 in like 3rd or somnething for like 1/8th mile or something it will act a little wierd....but other then that its pretty good, but then agian, when I drive it only a handful of times in a month I guess I cant tell all the time haha. But thats already, Ill let Dave at SGS get a new x-cal tune on it along with a smaller pulley this fall:nice:
