Electric fan in your classic?

I know several of you probably have electric fans in your old mustang. If so I would definately like to hear your opinions. I have done a lot of reading and the fan of choice for many hot rodders is the coveted "taurus" fan. I looked into this, but I really didn't want to have to do all that wiring for the high and low speeds. Anyone run another kind of fan? Also what CFM do you recommend. Summit has a 16" 2200 cfm fan for around 90 bucks, along with a thermostatic wiring harness for 45 that kicks in at 185 and off at 175, does this sound like something that will cool my little stock 289 automatic 67 w/ a/c?

I think for a 289 that should work fine. I am running dual fans from summitt and they are combined 2700cfm and that keeps my 408 nice and cool down here in FL! It also depends on your radiator but as your motor is a 289 I would assume the stock radiator will work just fine

Nice setup, I like the way that looks, Yes i have the factory radiator, but its in real good shape, you dont want to sell that aluminum radiator on the floor there do you?

The taurus install isnt that hard. I didnt wire up both speeds mainly because i thought i had a coooling problem so i just use the high speed.Now i find my car runs in the 168-175* range and i have to turn the fan off just to get to go into closed loop to tune it.But to wire both speed wouldnt be much more work.

I upgraded to a 20 inch aluminum radiator and an electric 2500 cfm fan in the 66 and have not had a cooling problem since.

Get a DC Controller unit and it will run at a variable speed - I have a MK8 fan and DC Controller (The FK-50P )in my 93 5.0 and I plan on using the same setup in my 67 coupe. The only other thing needed is a higher amp alternator since the MK8 draws about 30amps.

I have one on my truck. Its a single fan, unknown brand. I do not have it wired to a temp sensor. Just a switch.

It keeps the stock 302 within normal temp limits. Even on a hot day. I will have to dig around and see what brand it is.

well, that $150 DC controller is pretty much what I am looking into. I assume it uses pwm for rpm control. I love guys who charge you $150 for a black box and when you click "Theory of operation" they give you

I sure would sell the radiator but...It is long gone. I put the big radiator in about a year ago and someone scooped up the old one real quick!

There are a lot of us Fox guys who use the DC Controller, I have had mine for over 2 years on my 93 which is also my daily driver. It works great in traffic with the A/C on in the Texas heat.<?

How it works - it is programmed to turn the fan on in a few situations, first, when the coolant temp gets hot enough (you can set it to 165, 180, 190 and others via jumper pins). Its not just a one speed on and off, it ramps up fan speed according temperature and when its cool enough it slows the fan down - it constantly takes temp readings and adjusts accordingly. The other times it comes on is if you have under drive pulleys, it will constantly stay on at 10% power, if you have A/C in your car, it automatically goes to 50% power when the compressor kicks in.

Do a search in the 5.0 section and you will see tons of threads on it and how good it is.

I don't know how you got yours to fit with the stock radiator. I had to cut out the radiator support and move my aluminum radiator forward and yet only have about 1/4" of clearance to the WP pulley.

Good:
Cheap & available at salvage yards
Pulls air like crazy
Has two speeds
Can get a new motor at almost any parts store

Bad:
4 1/4" thick
draws a lot of amps
Need separate relays/controller

that's what I was gonna say, how the hell are you guys running the taurus fan in a 65/66 car??

I had to cut mine down literally almost in half, and now it looks so bad I won't use it.

any tips???the water pump smacks the taurus fan, not near enough room

2 small slots in the radiator support does the trick..., no need to trim the shroud depth wise, but you can probably have the wp snout trimed down for a little more clearence.

Thanks for the pictures. I studied them, but couldn't make sense of them. It looks like you cut out like a once inch slot towards the top.

what does that do? How would that allow the radiator to slide backwards by a couple of inches?

Yes, i basically changed the mounting surface of the rad, and shimmed it to gain more clearence...
