Stock radio removal

Can anybody tell me how in the world you remove the factory stereo from a 92 lx? My radio still works great, but I can't stand listening to the garbage stations in my town anymore so it's time for a CD player. I attempted to pull it out yesterday and now have no clue how to take it out. My console has two big black bracket like things on each side of it behind the radio and I can't even see how the wires plug into the radio and these brackets look like they bolt into the tranny tunnel? Do I have to take the heater controls out first so I can get to the radio wires/plugs or what?! I tried taking the heater controls out but the plugs don't seem to want to come unplugged from the controls and I broke the clip for the red plug which really agrevated me!

Pretty much all the chain auto parts stores sell the ford stereo removal tool. They look like two forks. Place a fork in on each end, push the forks out a little bit and pull the stereo out. Cheap tool too, can't be more than $10.

ohhh ok. I though those 2 little holes on each side of the radio might have something to do with that because I pushed a little phillips screwdriver into them and they seemed to loosen a little bit. Alright I'll have to go get me one of those tools. Thanks again guys!

I was cheap - 4 nails from Home Depot... I think they are still rattling around in my ashtray...

The radio was easy to get out using them. Stick them in the holes and push them towards the doors. The radio will pull out with no problems.

From a 94-98 mustang? Isn't the cd player and stereo separate in them?

Yes, but it can be made to work. The 94-98 Mach setup works with the 93 premium amp setup.

I was going to do this in my car, but went with the OEM 1993 CD player instead as I don't even own a cassette

Well I got my radio out of the dash, but didn't unplug it because the plugs don't seem to want to come out but I think the little guards/locks on them have to come off first then they should hopefully pull out w/ no problems. It doesn't really matter yet anyways as nobody around sells the dash install kit for the 87-93 mustang so I had to order it from Best buy. They have 85-86 and 94-00 but not the 87-93 go figure! I think im going to go with a sony x plod. I got my wiring harness adapter today since im just going to use my stock speakers, probably pick up the stereo this weekend. Do I need the one cable for the antenna or not? Yeah I like listening to my exhaust as well when I can't find a good station or hate the song that's playing but only problem is it's just not loud enough for my liking. Stock H-pipe and stock headers aren't letting the flow's play their true wide open tone. Should be a little louder once I get my catless x pipe on...if I could ever get the bolts from the headers to come loose from the factory h pipe...someday lol
