T5 rebuild?

I just picked up an 89gt and most of the time it does not shift into 2nd the few times it does it will rattle and then pop up. I believe this to be a bad shift fork and 2nd syncro issue because every other gear shifts great.

A shop quoted me $800, they will pick up the car from my house drive it 2hours one way; exchange my T5 with a freshly rebuilt and install it and then drive my car back 2hours to my house. It comes with a 1 year warranty as well. Does this sound like a good deal?

Swapping a T-5 directly is a pretty simple task. With the right tools, an hour start to finish. With that said, if you don't have the means to do such a job, then $800 is probably one of the better prices I've seen for a T-5 install assuming the transmission the put in there is not junk. A shop, which has overhead costs then need to cover, might charge $750-1250 alone just to rebuild a T-5. To have them do the install for $800 is a good price. What sort of T-5 you get is a completely different story.

But, they will make money off your T-5. The cost of replacing the 2nd gear drive gear and syncho slider with a new blocker ring is probably less than $150-200 if you were able to do the work yourself. If they have a few junk T-5's they rob for parts, could be even cheaper.

1 hour start to finish... Wow I that is a little skewed.. I have pulled my trans more times than I would like to count and never did it in 1 hour..if you have a lift it could be done in an hour.. But not on jackstands.. Takes ten minutes to get it up on stands properly..

I'll ship a case of favorite beer to the person who can do all this in their garage or driveway, by themselves, in just one hour.

Put car on jackstands, preferably at both ends.
Drain the trans fluid
Drop the cat-back
Remove the driveshaft
Remove the shifter
Remove the O2 sensors
Remove the h-pipe
Remove the clutch cable cover and release the clutch cable
Disconnect the speedo cable, neutral safety switch, and reverse lights
Pull trans
Reposition the new trans, fiddle with it until it seats correctly
Reconnect the speedo cable, neutral safety switch, and reverse lights
Reconnect the clutch cable
Reinstall the clutch cable cover
Reinstall the H-pipe
Reinstall the O2 sensors
Reinstall the shifter
Reinstall the driveshaft
Reconnect the cat-back
Refill the trans
Reinstall the shifter
Take the car back off the stands

Do I have to use hand tools or can I use power tools?

The offer stands either way.

Have I ever mentioned how ridiculously unhelpful these "name that tune" threads are to Joe User? Or how much I hate them? Joe User cannot change a trans in an hour. A NASCAR pitman couldn't do it in an hour and have the car in running condition when he was done.

$800 is actually a pretty good price. Majority of shops go by book value on their R&R. So if they only really have lets say 3 hours of labor in the car, but the book calls for 8, they charge for 8 and that's how they make their money. Shops have over head costs such as rent, lights, phones, oh and not to mention salary for their employees.

At my shop, just a factory rebuild for an AOD Mustang with us taking the trans out and putting it back in is $1050.
Shops have to cover more than just the costs for their parts is what I'm getting at.

$800 is well worth it.

Figure most shops get about $250 to install a trans, then a small parts rebuild is roughly $500. Add fluids in and you are at $800.

IMO, buy a new flywheel and clutch while it's out unless they look exceptionally good.

I also agree with mfe92, someone that comes here asking for trans advice is unlikely to have the want, tools, or skill to do it themselves.
Honestly at $800, i would bother doing it myself either.

As for an hour, lol.
A new guy probably wouldn't even have the H pipe off in that time.

I bet I could get close... Trans can be filled when it goes in just needs to have plug in output. The bell housing can stay in the car just un bolt from the trans. Shifter handle needs to come off but base can stay. The o2s just need unplugged. The driveshaft bolts could pose a issue though

12mm 12 point and a hammer.. Those bastards are always tight.. The top Starter bolt always pisses me off..without taking console out could save 15 or so minutes.. Never tried it that way.

Still need to take the console off to take the handle off buy its 2 bolts not 4 and if you don't take the bell housing off the starter can stay.

For what it's worth... I just pulled my rear out in just over 30 minutes
