96 Mustang Conv map lights in rear view mirror won’t turn off

Can not figure out why the map lights in the rear view mirror won’t turn off. They stay on even when I depress the rocker switchs in the mirror housing. I have also tried rotating the headlight on/off switch (it clicks “on” when rotated counter clockwise.). This doesn’t solve the problem either. Could it be a bad door “plunger” switch? Has anyone encountered this? If so...sure would appreciate feedback. I had to unplug the mirror/maplights to keep the battery from discharging. Thank you!

It does have keyless remote that works. I’m not entirely sure what you mean when you say “door key minder.” As for the headlights, it does “chirp/ding” if I exit the car, and have failed to turn off the headlamps.

Honestly, I just purchased this car several days ago and I’m still trying to “learn“ the car. It’s the first mustang I’ve ever own, really love it. It just has a couple of things wrong that I am trying to get figured out.

THANK YOU very kindly for replying, and any additional feedback/ideas are greatly appreciated.

The door key minder is what makes the "ding ding" alert when the key is left in the lock with the door open.

If the driver's door minder functions work then it seem more likely to focus on the passenger's door ajar switch.

But......since this car has remote keyless entry, that module could also be at fault.

The way the courtesy light system works on your model year car is it's necessary to check virtually every switch to confirm that it's is working as expected.

EDIT: if it's just the map reading lights that are stuck on and the rest of the lights work as expected THEN the problem has to be in the switch. Again the system is quite complicated with multiple bulbs in each socket. A set of wiring diagrams and a test light could be your friend here.

It would be helpful to know IF the BK and/or the GY wire has power. It will be necessary to remove both bulbs. Use a test light. There are two BK wires. One is a ground. It's the other BK wire to test.

IF interested in getting a full set of wiring diagrams for yourself I maybe able to help. Send PM.

The door key minder DOES work. Based on your advice...I’m assuming I need to focus on the passenger door ajar switch. HOPEFULLY, that is the problem.

Clearly...tracking down the problem can be a process. Soooo thankful for your assistance!

Wmburns...You, my friend we’re spot on with your technical guidance. I checked the passenger door “door ajar” plunger switch, and the plastic ring which secures it in place was broken. It clearly needs replaced. While I haven’t rec’d the replacement one yet...I’m 100% confident this will correct the map light issue.

10000 thank you’s to you!

Thank-you for the follow up post. I wish more people would update their threads with the steps taken to resolve their problem so that others can learn. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination itself.
