Progress Thread '88 GT Hell Horse - All over the place

  • Sponsors (?)

I know it has been a little slow progress wise on new updates, but the weather has been terrible making it impossible to get a new video. I may just do a video in the garage with a couple revs to see it all working.

A bit of good news is I did get my Xmas present that I wanted. It is a complete WMeth kit that will be installed on my new engine build. I got with the kit a 7 and 10 size nozzles, so this will be some fun.

Digital Dash Update:
Looking at the weather it seems that this weekend it maybe free of rain for a couple days. I plan to get a video of the dash running with a couple revs and then some runs down the road as well.

New Engine & Transmission:
I also have plans for a new engine build on the horizon, since the current 331 has been in the car for 15 years. It is old and tired for the upcoming plans I have for the car. This will be a slow build due to wanting to build it right, but are currently in the planning phase on the project.

Current Plans:
  • Dart 302 Block
  • Custom Cam
  • 76mm Turbo
  • WMeth Injection
  • 4R70W (MS TCU connected to MS ECU)
  • Digital Dash - Custom dashboard for adjusting Power Level and Transmission Settings

Goals of 500-700hp (this will be adjustable) with a full electronic transmission connecting both the MS TCU and the MS ECU together as one unit. This will utilize more of the Digital Dash system, since both TCU and ECU will be able to talk to the dash system.

I know its been a while since I have given an update, but I have been working on adding a few more additions to the digital dash.

I have been able to incorporate TeamViewer into the dash, so if I would like to make some changes remotely to the dash from inside the house I can :).

I am now also working on (2) additional features as well:

I am adding the ability to sync the dash with Google Drive, which will work bi-directional. This means that when you turn the car ON or OFF the dash will automatically sync with my Google Drive account if it has internet connection. Now, I will not have to download the datalogs and/or tune changes to a thumb drive to use on my laptop. Also, if I make any changes to the tune that I did on my laptop these will be pushed back to the dash.

I am also incorporating an internal GPS module as well. Most of you know one of the items missing from the MS2/Microsquirt system is having a speedometer. With the GPS module, I will now have a speedometer, but also be able to use the Performance and Economy features of TunerStudio as well. I will also be using this on the road course, since I will be datalogging the GPS data to be used in HP Tuners Race Render.

I figured you guys are interested in my project as I continue to add more features to it, so I thought it was a good time to update my thread.

Forward progress on the (2) new features:

Google Drive Sync - I have tested the sync progress manually, and it works. Also have the automated process mostly written up for testing as well.

GPS Module - I got in the module and the external antenna, but noticed that I was missing a connector from the module to the antenna. The connector has been ordered, and should hopefully be here soon.

Now you need to get Alexa in there so you can tell her what screen you want.:chin

Got the GPS Module wired up, and installed with its connector. Ran into a road block with the connector and the GPS antenna both having male ends, so I need to get a connector to attach them together. Doesn't matter anyways since it is supposed to rain for the next 7 days, so testing until it goes away.

I found a different connector, so planning on returning the ones that I got for the correct end.

Idk how I missed this thread!

So there is a local drag racer here who turned me on to this back 2017ish. He has one in his SN95.

He bought this guys kit. Maybe he can help with any additional questions you may run into.
https://pidash.webs.com/
Yeah that guys stuff is a complete joke compared to what Kurtis has designed. The pidash is just a raspberrypi with the tuning software loaded into it.
The DD-EFI dash has a special power supply and a list of features that are unique and allow you to completely customize your install. Including splash screens videos, remote tuning, and a bunch of other features I'm helping him beta test.

Edit: didn't mean to sound like I was short with ya. We did alot of research before we started so that the end result was going to he far better than the half hearted attempts others have made.

In fact I have one of these DD EFI dashes in my car.

Steve thank you for the positive feedback on my dash as always!!!

Yeah I know of the pidash, and was looking at one of them before building my own version. I ran into some items I wanted different due to the the product being too basic as Steve mentioned, since I wanted mine to operate more like modern cars to include a splash screen video during boot-up (user configurable). Then opens directly to the dashboard display with full capabilities of TunerStudio and MegaLogViewer. The other issue I had was it didnt include the power supply that had to be bought separately, which I wanted more advanced features of putting the screen to sleep during short trips to eliminate the reboot-up process.

Here recently I have been working on a few more enhancement to take this to the next level, which includes remote access via TeamViewer (completed), Automatic sync to Google Drive (in progress), and internal GPS for speedometer, boost-by-mph, economy/performance abilities, etc (in progress)

I have been able to get the correct connector for the GPS module to external antenna, and have it installed in its final position. I have also run the external antenna on top of the dash between the defrost vents, so it gets a clear point out the windshield. After hooking everything up and setting the communication settings in TS I am currently at a stand still due to TS is currently not reading the GPS module. The GPS module is putting out the readings and the computer sees the reads, but nothing in TS. After talking to EFIAnalytics there seems to be an issue the the driver/reader for the GPS communications. They are supposed to be releasing a new version in the next couple weeks, which should address this issue.

While I wait, I am going to be working on increasing some the performance settings of the GPS module to take advantage of the 10Hz reading abilities it has. The default setting only read every 1 sec or 1Hz, which is a no go for me. I will be increasing the reading settings to 10Hz which will get readings at .1 seconds.

Sorry for the slow update on the two latest features as I ran into a little road block on the GPS Communication with TunerStudio. After talking with with EFI Analytics, there seems to be a possible issue with the JSSC driver, so Phil wrote a new reader for the data stream coming from the GPS. Now just waiting on the latest Beta release to come out to proceed further.

While waiting, I have made some further progress on the Google Drive Sync feature. I made some changes to the process to make Google Drive the primary of the TunerStudio Project data, so once you turn off the car it will copy the new/changed files from the dash to Google Drive. If you make changes/delete files from your Google Drive it will Sync these changes to the dash once the dash it turned on. Now you can make all changes directly from your Google Drive account, and they will be applied to the dash.

Additional feature added for automatic Datalog Stopping once the ignition is turned off. This makes it so if you are use the Triggered Start feature inside TunerStudio, which I typically use RPM>600 it will automatically Start the datalog, and once the ignition is turned off it will stop the datalog. Now I dont have to start/stop datalogs and it will automatically record everytime I drive the car.

The above two features will make it so all I have to do is:
- Drive the car, and it will automatically datalog the drive (Start/Stop)
- It will push the Datalog to my Google Drive account automatically.
- I can then review the datalog via MLV and make any needed changes to the tune
- It will then pull the latest tune from Google Drive upon restarting the car

SOOOOOOO close to get everything on my todo list done.

This thing is becoming phenomenal !!! With GPS capability can we make it data plot road courses. Guess the time overlay of the global position and the datalog could be configured to both show in a file for reviewing via tablet or larger screen.

The cameras that plot track position have been intriguing me lately. Would be nice to have that paired with datalog in one unit. You could get a huge portion of the market if it can pair regular streets and datalogs in one file.

I tried to introduce your screen to a FB group and a bunch of people responded with the rpi one by someone else. That was before these new changes. Once this newest model is developed I think people will really buy as long as the price point stays reasonable.

Great ! Amazing work !

The camera point is on the todo list as well...One of my personal goals is to drive the red mustang on the road course with the paddle shifters and everything. I really like the http://racerender.com/Products/index.html which will take the video and datalogs to do what you are asking. After I get these two items done, I am looking for a camera to tie to the computer as well. With the Google Drive Sync it will be able to automatically copy the datalog(s) and video(s) to be used by the Race Render product.

I also have on the list a widescreen LCD screen as well, which is going to be awesome. This should take up most of the real estate side-to-side of the instrument cluster.

I got another update on the beta version of TunerStudio being out hopefully this week. This means that I would be able to test the fix for the GPS Module. That would be huge to get that item completed, and ready to go.

Update:

The latest Beta release for TunerStudio is now out with some advanced features, but more importantly the fix for the RPi GPS not working. I loaded the new beta version, and test drove the car with a now working speedometer :banana::banana:. Now need to work on increasing the how often the GPS module reads your location, since the default settings are only once a second. It can be increased to 1/10 of a second, which is what my plan is to do.

Almost have this finalized...if anyone cares
