Help Choosing a Torque Converter Aod

I'm planning on pulling out my aod transmission and was wondering if I should switch my torque converter. At the moment I have a stock converter in the car but have a 3200-3600 boss hog converter laying around should I switch to that. I have a mild 302 in the car atm with a XE262 comp cam in the car.

Depends on what you use the car for.

If just cruising around, visit local ice cream shop with your kids or significant other. Leave it stock. Get a shift kit a decent trans cooler (actually any trans cooler is better than what the factory included) and call it a day.

If drag racing is high priority, sure, put the other converter in. You can launch harder (not needed for cruising).

If autocrossing or track racing, I don't have experience here but I would think that the stall could produce a not optimal performance (essentially limit low RPM usage).

I have a stock AOD in my 90, with a stock torque converter and a Lentech VB (fixes the shift pattern issue too). I have a mild set up as well, probably 330-350hp at the crank (never tested but 1/4 mile on the street MPH would put it around there). I launch from idle with a short tire chirp and chirp 2nd and 3rd with 5500 rpm shifts. Drives off at idle nice while cruising and shifts smooth. I like it.

There is always a gain in switching the converter over stock. This isn't the best forum to ask on though. Lots of manual guys, and very few drag racers. Not sure where to direct you. Converters have gone the way of camshafts; everyone is recommending a custom built piece from PTC or something now. It really depends on your goals.

It doesn’t take a drag racer to comment on what may or may not be a decent converter for your car.

I always defer to the experts. You call up dude at xxx torque converter supply, and you tell him what you want to do, what you currently have, and dude tells you what you should buy.

Im no manual guy. And I’m no drag racer,..but I’d think twice about installing a slippery converter in a street car. And a 3600 stall converter installed in an AOD behind a fairly stock 5.0, will..........( what’s the word here?...................oh yeah....Suck)

Seems like many people have mixed opinions about this

Just trying to make a street car fun

Agreed , my setup was not cheap but then again what is these days !

A $300 converter from B&M or TCI is cheap, and will be just fine on a street car. I had a racing acquaintance that pulled out his B&M to put in a custom Neil Chance converter, and the car consistently ran slower. It happens sometimes.

Yeah but that’s when you have to work with your converter guy to maximize what you have . In the end it will go faster . It just may not have been right the first go round

I'm the kind of guy who would spend $900 on a converter. I don't think the OP is that kind of person. If you aren't trying to shave fractions of a second off your 60', then it's not money well spent.

When high hp and street driving come into play it is definitely money well spent to have a converter that can handle both. I spent close to that on the PTC that’s in mine .

If you hate the whole AOD thing as I do, put the converter in!! You won't regret it. It will absolutely transform the car into something much more fun to drive.
I did a Precision Industries Stallion converter in my convertible about 20 years ago. Cruising around was barely noticeable, but from a dead stop was an animal! It flashed around 3500 with a mild combo and later with a blower would flash at 3800. Great manners and softened up the idle roll cam surge thing.
I would do it in a heartbeat!
