Brakes The Ultimate 4-lug/5-lug Brake Conversion/upgrade Thread

What is the bore diameter on the MM unit? I don’t see it stated anywhere?

Staring at the pics of the bronco unit, and seeing you can get them for under $15 at local chain parts store, it’s definitely worth trying out.

This Drum/Backing plate/ shoes and hdwe was a package I purchased at Quick Performance for the 9 inch installed in my 83... this conversation makes me wonder what size these cylinders are??
They are 11" drums

‘89 Ford Bronco had the 15/16” wheel cylinders.

Thing is I don’t know the compatibility with the Mustang drum brake. Given they are $10 each on Rockauto, might be worth buying one to test out.
I have purchased the WC34876 and WCA37862 in hopes that maybe I am getting it right, but I don't think I am. The old thread on the Corral calls out for WAGNER WC 34876, but it doesn't seem those are 15/16"....maybe it was a typo and the upgrade is supposed to be a 13/16" wheel cylinder?

I show 13/16 for those part numbers.

These are the ones I see calling out 15/16" bore. For a 1989 Ford Bronco.

Yes, thank you, I did see that on rock auto as well. I'll try to grab a pair locally, but still would like to be 100% sure about this. I am doing this for the possibility, if I upgrade to the SVO front calipers on my '91 GT.

I’d did the SVO / Mark VII front caliper swap and to tell you the truth it was a waste of time and money. Buy some good pads for the stock calipers and move on.

If I just go with the 73mm calipers and leave the wheel cylinders alone, could I still use the OEM master cylinder?

The SVO calipers are almost 50% more piston surface area than the stock 60mm calipers. So within an MC change as well, the pedal will be softer.

some folks are fine with it. I ran the 73mm calipers with stock MC and rear drums and it was adequate. I didn’t run it long however and went full cobra brakes soon after.

I am staying 4 lug, so my choices are limited!
Choices limited? In pads or rotors or calipers?

I did 4 lug on SN spindles. Then when I wanted to go 5 lug it was just a hub and rotor change (I happened to go XTS Brembos too, but I didn't to). By going SN spindle you can use any caliper that will work with those spindles for 5 lug. Then the choice is what size wheel/rotor you want to go with?

I had 11.34" rear rotors and 11.8" front (which required a 16" wheel) but could have easy kept the factory turbines.

Looks like a nice setup. With my current Borbet Type A wheels (that started life as a BMW wheel), I am a little reluctant to use the SN-95 spindle because it will stick the wheel out further more (from a looks perspective it seems to be at the limit already). Which calipers and rotors did you run?

Calipers and rotors are both from a Lincoln LS/Jaguar S-type. Calipers are similar to the Mustang PBRs except the pistons are different. Mustang caliper is dual 45mm pistons, Lincoln/Jaguar is dual piston 45mm/38mm.

For hub I used one from a 89 Thunderbird (5x108 and smooth backside of hub) and re-drilled for 4x108. I did the same with the rotors as the Lincoln/Jaguar is also 5x108. I used them for 4 years before switching to 5 lug. You can get OEM 5x108 rotors in many sizes up to 15.75" diameter (I have a whole list if needed).

If you wanted to keep 15" wheels you could get front rotors from an 89-97 T-bird, they are dimensionally identical to OEM SN95 rotors except they are 5x108 bolt pattern, then redrill them to 4x108. SN brakes, spindles and keep your factory 10 hole or turbine rims (I will be doing this someday with another project).

94/95 spindles will only move your rim out 1/8". If you relocate your lower control arm inboard for better suspension geometry you will actually be in under the fender more than you are today.

I have some other questions. I havent got the vehicle yet, but Im looking at a 1983-85 5.0L Stang. I know I'll probably have to swap out the rear end to the 8.8, and I dont want to mess with the SN95 concerns.

These are the parts I picked out. Can you confirm its all good for these early mid 80s 4 Eyed Stangs?

1987-1993 5.0L Stang Spindles
1987-1993 5.0L Struts
1987-93 Front Control Arms
1986 Lincoln Town Car Brake Master Cylinder
1986 Lincoln Town Car Calipers
1986 Mustang SVO 5 lug front rotors
1983-92 LH Side 5 Lug Rear Axle Shafts Ford Ranger Part # E3TZ-4234-C

Now if I could find out what 10" drum kits would bolt up to the 8.8 and stock Mustang rear brake setups, that would help. The 10 inch drum set was what was tied with the front disc brake setups on the Lincolns I chose.

I purchased the brakes and drums from Quick Performance... Contact them and ask them..... They have always taken the time to answer my questions..

Why don't you go ahead and do rear discs?

For the money you are about to spend just move up to the stock SN95 brakes. It’s the brakes these cars should have come with from the factory and five lug which opens the door for wheel selection.
