Classic Car Insurance

I'm guessing i'm not the only one that pays and doesn't drive anywhere.

Nope. Why it pains me to send Haggerty $600 a year for something i drive less than 100 miles. That's only going to go up when i bump the value.

Edit: Just edited to $40K to see what it would cost me. $950/yr. Ouch.

I'll agree, they would be exposed by now.
I think Grundy's business model is that they insure cars most people don't really drive.
I've had runs where the car saw less than 100 miles in 3 years, so i paid them roughly $900 to drive 100 miles (and i'm probably high balling that number, it could be as low as 25 miles). Now that i take rides with the kids, it gets more miles, but that still is probably 250 or less per year.

I did a Google search for ratings for classic auto insurers, and Grundy got good marks. Grundy doesn’t set a mileage limit, different from the others.

American Collectors Insurance called earlier today to go over their quote. I asked to bump the personal liability to $250/$500K and asked for a $500 deductible. That took the annual to $712 for the $40K agreed value. I need to call Grundy.

I have State Farm classic/agreed value ($17,000) on my 03 Mach 1. $9.09 a month. It's transferred to Haggerty now, but the price only went up like $1 a month or something. Super cheap. Now State Farm gets me for STUPID money on our 2026 Ram 2500 (Gas) and the 24 4Runner. Plus having a 16 year old driving now hurts my soul too.

I currently have four cars/trucks covered by State Farm, including the '86 Mustang, a 2016 F-150, a 2003 Honda S2000 and a 2025 Honda Accord. The Accord is the only one that's relatively costly. The S2000 is only $400/year.

But having a 16-year-old on a policy is a killer!

Yep, we also have 2025 RZR PRO XP4 (turbo) and daughters 2003 Ram 1500. Then the homeowners etc etc. I spend as much on insurance a month as our first house payment cost us 20 years ago. (you know how I know I'm getting old? haha).

OK, I called Grundy. They quoted me a price of $298/year. In the conversation, I asked the Grundy rep directly why their price was so much lower. She replied that they're restrictive on how the classic car is used. Driving to a car show, cars and coffee, etc. is legitimate, but using it to make a run to Home Depot or something of that sort isn't covered. They don't want you driving the car during rush hour, in traffic. They don't want it parked in a public parking lot, although parking at a car show or cars and coffee is OK. Guess that removes them from the discussion, as I use the Mustang to run errands and such, but always park where the likelihood of someone else getting close is pretty low

Wonder what they think of the occasional test and tune. :)

You should call Haggerty or the others as well and confirm their use. I spoke to them years ago and they told me the same restrictions. No Home Depot runs. No driving to work.

I insure my '00 GT, my '23 Explorer ST and my wife's '24 Honda CRV through standard regular insurance. All 3 have the same coverage but the Honda CRV is the most expensive to insure! '00 and ExST are ~$1K/year while the CRV is $1500/yr.

No kids yet driving...not looking forward to that.

State farm agreed value - before Hagerty is taking over this year stated occasional driving with no location restrictions was ok but never gave me a total mileage number. Just that they'd request pics of odometer periodically and determine then if we were driving too much.

My wife may or may not have a couple speeding tickets on her record, ha ha (the Lexus).

Hagerty, at least my policy, any use, just not you're daily commuter, is covered. Taking it to work once in a while is acceptable... This is how it was explained to me by my agent at least

It would seem the main concern is that it's not your daily driver.
I'm also somewhat sure it's nearly impossible to determine where you are going.
And i'm guessing nobody here parks their car in a closer spot near anyone.

Copy and Pasted from Grundy's site:

How Can I Use My Car?

Grundy wants you to enjoy your car, not keep track of mileage like some programs with limitations. Therefore, we give you unlimited miles for pleasure driving and in collector car-oriented activities. It is even OK if occasionally you drive your collector car to work to show it off to friends. However, your collector car must not be used as a daily driver. We require you and all licensed drivers in your household to have a modern car for everyday use.

When you have your car at home, it must be kept in an enclosed, secure garage when not in use. If you are away from home on extended outings your car is fully protected if you must park it outside, for example in a hotel parking lot. Grundy coverage includes Trip Interruption that reimburses you for hotel and repair costs in the event of a breakdown, and we also reimburse you for towing and labor charges up to $250. You can count on Grundy as you cruise.

I’m with @Mustang5L5. The person I spoke with today mentioned the unlimited mileage, but basically said I could only use it for driving to/from cr shows or other similar activity. She specifically stated “…not to be used for errands.”

When I had my 67 Dodge and my 08 BMW American Collectors was taking less than $600 a year to insure both...
Agreed upon $47K for the dodge ( their valuation ) and $16K for the 650.... Under 2500 miles a year requirement for each car and I had to have a daily driver of which I have a Chevy truck.... They also had to be kept in a locked garage.... I was pretty pleased with that..
