0 Mark On Balancer

I used a positive stop to find true TDC on my balancer. The current 0 mark was 2 degrees off in the advanced direction. I'll remark and install timing tape so I'm good from here on out.

My brain is struggling (happens frequently). Since my 0 mark was incorrectly advanced by 2 degrees, that means my actual initial timing was 2 degrees more retarded than I thought. Is this correct or do I have it backwards?

The new 0 mark will be 2 degrees on the ATDC side of the factory 0 mark if that helps explain things.
 
From your description I would think it was 2° advanced. The crank moves clockwise and the distributor turns counter clockwise. Backwards at the crank is backward at the distributor, which advances timing towards the rotation of spark.

The problem is if slack is in the chain....then what you think is 2° advance timing could be 2° of chain slop.

Wait ! Now I'm confused !!!

How many miles are on it since the timing chain was replaced ?

No measuring slack that way. Duh. The piston is connected to the crank.

I'm with you....timing tape all the way. Glad you caught that rare moment of stupidity....you'd think I just started doing this or somethin' smh.

Now that I've thought about it.... Is the balancer in good shape ? These things have been known to slip, but usually the rubber would be pushing out of it.

Sounds like you know what you're doing so I'm sure you checked it.

You'll know when you mark it and put a light on it. If it bounces around you know somethings up.
 
Stock balancer that was part of a balanced rotating assembly via reputable engine builder. It looks good and he didn't mention anything about it. 2 degrees might be withing factory machining errors I suppose.
 
Don't pay any attention to my previous post. there should be no 2 degree 'tolerance' between piston tdc and 0 on the balancer. Don't know what kind of stop you are using, try this: rotate clock wise till piston touches stop, mark balancer, turn counter clock wise till it stops, mark the balancer, 0 is half the distance btween marks, that should be 0 on the balancer.
But I maybe still canfused, or is that cornfused, crankfused?
Now I have a headache.
 
That's exactly what I did. It was 2 degrees off. There was 1/4" difference between the distances from rotating the crank each way. Chop that difference in half to move the mark over....it comes to just about 2 degrees, or 1/8" distance on the balancer. Try it, you'll see
 
Sounds like you did it the same way I was thinking. Maybe try another balancer? If its used maybe it slipped, if its new maybe ring was installed wrong, I thinking keyway is tight. Worse case is a timing tape or just remember its 2 atdc
