03' Cobra, 460RWHP, Tire Recommendations

Hey everyone,

I haven't been on here in awhile (a little over a year and a half or so), and I'm not sure what the going recommendation is for pretty sticky tires. I have an 03 termi convertible with 460 rwhp / 480 rwtq, standard bolt ons, with 9,000 miles on it and stock tires. I want to get new tires for the rear, but I have no idea where to begin. I have the 10th anniversary rims, and I used to hear that nitto 555r's in 315 were one of the biggest tires that could fit on that rim, not to mention were pretty sticky, but they're getting harder to find. The stock tires just aren't cutting it anymore, and I need something with more traction. Any recommendations?

i made almost those exact numbers on my term.

i ran 295/35/18 bfg kdw 2's. they are the tires with the aggressive looking tread pattern. grabbed good, i think they last decent too (mileage)

Those look pretty good, but correct me if I'm wrong, aren't the 10th anniversary rims only 17"? The largest size I see for the kdw2's in 17" is 255/40ZR17, and I don't think going down a size would cut it.

Those Kumhos look sticky but no I haven't tried'em before.
Try the Nitto NT-05s. My buddy has a termi with the same specs and he says it's the stickiest street tire he's ever tried. (he's gone through 3 sets of other brands before that)

I know a lot of guys running, them, but they wear close to a drag radial. Lot's of great reviews though.

I like the Firestone Wide Ovals.

Get the nittos you can beat the crap out of them and they still last 15k or if you plan on add nitrous kit : ) maybe think about the Micky Thompson dr but they burn up pretty quick.

The nitto 555r is a drag radial, and as such, it will bite harder than any regular street tire. Of drag radials, the nitto has the longest life, by several factors of magnitude, but of course isn't quite as sticky as other drag radials. The nittos can last 10-12k miles while most other drag radials are only good for about 2-3k miles. You really can't even compare the nitto to a regular street tire, because they really do bite hard, especially if you get them hot.

I run the nittos on my 88 and have a similar power to weight ratio as you. On normal roads, I can't break them loose from a roll and can launch pretty aggressively from a stop. At the track, I can pull consistent 1.7-1.8 60' times. Try that with any regular street tire. For a street car that you don't put a lot of miles on, and you want the best traction possible, the nitto is the way to go.

I found the Nitto 555r on Jeggs; would a 315/35R17 fit on the stock 10th anniversary rim?

Correct me if I am wrong here guys but the stock rims are 17x9 ....you can't put anything bigger then a 295 on those and I heard that a 295 puts a lot of stress on the side wall.....if you want 315's i'm 90% sure you would have to upgrade to some deep dish tires or just a 17x10.5 doesn't have to be deep dish, but it sure as hell gives you a mean stance!

Let us know what you go with because I have an 04 Cobra and will be snagging some new tires in the spring

100% correct. Yes, they'll fit perfectly...attached is a pic of my wife's 01 GT with 9" rims all around and Nitto 315/35 X 17 DR rubber out back.

you can get the DRs but Nitto also makes a 555 performance tire that is not a DR...just a thought.

KDW2s in 295 and RT615s in 315 are not all that great. Of the two, KDWs grip better.

I have 315's on 17x10.5's and they are awesome, but do break loose semi easily on my car without warming them up. I've yet to go to the track to try them out with a nice burnout, though. I expect good results. - 1.7-1.8 60' would be nice!

Well from a different vehicle stand point and just letting you know about the tire, I ran Nittor NT05s on my lightning and they stuck like glue. Great Tire in my book
