Huh?

Always thought my GT was a little … loud … for a production car, GT or not. Didn’t think much of it…Never drove, or was a passanger in, another 05 GT other than mine. No, I didn't look under the rear when I bought it. Assumed as a used car with only 4000 miles it was 100% stock...anyhow...

So, first time I happen to pull next to a hardtop 05 GT just yesterday, and was looking forward to hearing that sweet same exhaust note as it pulled away. Light turns green. Nothing. Thought maybe my window wasn’t down far enough. I catch up and had both windows down. Let him pull away again. Nothing. Hmmm…mystery. I was curious why everyone looks at me at the lights.

Got home, looked at my mufflers, and low and behold they are Flowmaster 40 series. Stock Ford tips, stock Ford clamps, look stock...

Is it possible that an OEM Flowmaster was an option on a 05 GT? BTW: They are 42543, which on the Flowmaster site looks like 40 series with a 2.5" inlet/outlet but I measure 3.5" at the tip, and it's a perfect tube (i.e. must be 3.5" at the outlet. I'm telling you the install looks stock, with Ford stickers, Ford clamps, Ford stamped into the pipe on the other side of the muffler, etc...

??

Are the mufflers themselves black? Because Flow's have black mufflers. Also, the axle-back is usually the first thing Mustang owners do to their cars - I switched mine out at 500 miles, so it's very possible that your Mustang's previous owner did so too at only 4,000 miles. However, Flow's were NOT an OEM option for the 05 or 06 Mustangs. Chances are, the previous owner installed them if they really are Flowmasters.

Not black. Flowmaster is stamped on the stainless (I presume) muffler body. And that 42543 code is stamped on the ends.

Just never heard of anyone re-welding the stock Ford pipe from the muffler to the axel bend, which is what it looks like, and also using the stock chrome tips.

Anyway I look at it, the job was done flawlessly, the tips fit perfectly, and it sounds great!

Thanks for the quick reply!

when i bought my 05 in jan 05, the dealer had a gt that they installed flowmasters inplace of the stock mufflers. they kept the inlet and tips, but painted everything silver to cover up the welds. it is possible that this is what someone did to your car.

(the flowmaster gt kit was not available until april 05)

It's probably just the mufflers, not the complete axle-back system. Dealers do funny things to their cars before they sell them. Was it a returned car? My parents bought an expedition with 2500 miles on it and got it technically used, even though it was a new car. Whoever bought it had to return it for some reason.

...And I'll never know why it was sold with only 4000 miles. I have bought my last 10 cars from the same small niche dealer, and trust them 100% with each car I buy.

Anyhow, I know the older model Flowmasters have 2.5" outlet's (according to the Flowmaster website, and the model that is stamped on the muffler, mine should also) yet I know the ones I measured on my GT have 3.5" (like the new ones specific to the GT). Yea me.

I think what you got was a swap that someone wanted to look factory. This is the first set of Flowmasters I have ever had that were not silver. Flowmaster doesn't just make kits, you can by standard mufflers, so someone may have just purchased the mufflers, took it to a shop and had them installed and the folks at the shop just put the factory tips and pipe onto it to make them fit.

Oh well... sounds like a great problem to have.

I can't believe you would think Flomasters could have been a factory option over thinking you USED car had someone weld in aftermarket mufflers.

You answer is YES, someone switched out the exhaust on your used Mustang within 4000 miles.

Why would that be so off? So Hurst wasn't a factory option in some cars? I can name a dozen other "aftermarket" merchandisers who have supplied parts to stock cars, from the factory, especially higher performance vehicles. No fooling...really...someone switched the mufflers? I was just saying pal that it looks like a factory job, and I didn't think Flowmaster made 3.5" mufflers, with hangers that hapen to perfectly fit. Wasn't out of the question as to being a possibility. End of story.

Flowmaster were not at option on the 05. Your previous owner simply had them welded in.

The Flowmaster 05 kit actually uses a vastly different muffler than the 40 series, they designed it specifically for the 05-06 GT.

More here, and you can listen to the sound clip and compare to stock or how yours sounds:
