07 GT Vs 99+ Camaro SS or Z28

Yeah, I just may have to make the switch come the new Camaro; I'm sick and tired of Ford pushing out low HP engines and telling us there "fast", bull****. How can GM make a car almost 10 years older that is still faster than the new ones today? Gm outperforms our Modular engines w/ the old push rod design and puts out as much if not more HP than our Mustangs w/ a supercharger. I'm also sick of my car spending more time in the shop than the head technician.

I was cruisin through town and this black Z28 was following me so I figured he was wanting to see what my car could do. I pulled out of town and got on the highway and I couldn't get the guy off my bumper. He ended up passing me because I let off, I was worried about cops. He slowed down and I caught back up with him and we come to a yield and he took off a little sooner than me but he was about half a car lenght ahead before I slowed down. Are the SS or Z28 that fast? I have a 5 speed and I'll admit I'm not a good driver when it comes to racing but damn I thought I would beat him. My stang is stock except for some flowmasters. What do you guys think?

a bone stock ss/z28 would eat you alive. trust me, i had my a$$ handed to me in my 98gt a few years ago by a 94 camaro. but ford made their cars affordable and
realized consumers could mod them at their own pace. after being torn a new one by that 94, i test drove a 02 camaro ss, and hated the way it drove.(guess thats why we havent seen one in 5 yrs). it was quick as hell but to me it had no "personality". get yourself a c/a kit and tuner and you will notice an immediate difference in performance

Years ago when I had my '00 GT there was a guy down the street who had just bought an '01 SS. We took eachother for rides. OMG was his car a beast!!!!! It totaly smoked the tires in 3rd!!!!! It's no wonder they can still beat todays stock Stangs. I may never own a Chevy, but damn those new Camaros look sweet!!!!!

I dont why you guys are having problems with the old SS and trans am's, because I beat every stock one I ever raced, usually by about 2 to 3 cars. Now a slightly modified one (Headers, intake, tune) is another story.

I will defend the old Camaros to the hilt because I had one and after 4 years I'm sorry to say it had personality by the shedload and I loved that car. By contrast, the Corvette C5 Z06 and my blown 05 are far more anodyne but the reason for that is they're so damned capable that it's much harder to have any real fun.

However, before you beat up on your Mustang too much, the two cars weigh much the same and it's an open secret that the LS1 put out far more hp than GM ever admitted because they wanted to distance it from the Corvette. When MM&FF tested the 2002 SS, it was supposed to put out 325hp but it put out 317 at the wheels which makes that tranny a very efficient unit! There had been a dyno test in 1998 comparing a stock TA with a stock C5 and it was the TA that put out more power to the back wheels (but of course it weighs more than the Vette). If you think about it, why would GM have to spend more money to detune an engine that rolls off an assembly line at a rate of knots. I suspect they didn't, just controlled it via the computer.

The major difference between the two cars is handling. In stock form, the Camaro SS is a reasonable car but can be squirelly at the back end and nowhere in the same ball park as the Mustang. This is because the T-tops make it your flexible friend and of course many of the outer panels are plastic with no structural function. On my old Z28, I had to have subframe connectors welded in and a strut top brace fitted to stiffen up the body and these add weight but partially cure the floppiness. The 2005 Mustang is incredibly stiff to begin with so has an immediate advantage.

I still have fonder memories of my Z28 but that's probably because I drove it more as a daily driver whereas my Stang is more a weekend car. I also think the T-tops made it a different car for different days.

Don't fear the LS1s too much. I've done well enough against modded and unmodded LS1s at my track.

I'm modded of course, but when you go to the track often who isn't?

When I line up against an LS1 it generally comes down to who can launch and maintain traction the best. Unless it is a heavily modded LS1, then there is no chance.

I guess the bottom line is start modding your ride.

Yes I've had better times on my modded 05 GT then stock and lightly modded Z28s... Comaro SS I havnt been able to beat.... yet! I think if I added some gears, UDP, and better tires it can be done for cheap.

I raced a guy with a newer z28 and I bogged real bad coming off the line, but he wasn't more than a couple lengths away the entire time. I was talking to him afterwards and he said he had cams, intake, and exhaust. Maybe he coulda used a different driver mod.


I was stock at the time btw.
