ok im building my fox body again im trying to get it in the 10s i bought a dss 331 pro bullet short block w 9.5 to 1 compression w 64 cc head i have a c4 trans w 3600 stall 373 gears locked rear lake wood lowers moroso drag springs koni adjustable shocks in rear front is stock 4 banger im running 28x10.50s slicks car weighs 3000 give or take what am i missing or can this be done im not interested in sc or turbo due to im running carb set up but not against spray

I'm guessing you are probably capable of solid 11 second runs. Nitrous would definetly help. You didn't tell the rest of your motor setup.

Joe

I had a very similar set up; 331 with AFR 165's, blower cam, edelbrock intake with 750 edelbrock carb, with a TKO 5 speed. The only real difference was I had very high compression 11:5:1 maybe even 12:0:1 and I dyno'd at 370 rwhp. That combo I ran consistant 11.2 all day but the car was horrible on the street due to the compression. I think with 100 or 150 shot I could have hit low 10's, 9's were witin reach with 250 shot but who knows how long the block would have lasted. Make sure you girdle the motor!!! Like I said I ran the 11.2 but didnt run the spray, so the other times are just my opinion.

You dont need any power adder to run 10s with that motor. You will need to take it to the track, get a baseline on it, and start tweaking it from there. What cylinder head are you using, what camshaft and what intake?

You cant just slap a bunch of parts together and expect it will go tens though. Its going to take a plan, and the chassis is going to have to work very well. If you do it right, at the weight you plan on being at, a 150 shot will get you in the 9's...

more gear, more converter, a trans brake wouldnt hurt, more compression. what heads, intake, cam, exhaust and suspension? the 28" tire with a 3.73 is like running a 3.55 with a 26.

Compression is kinda low imo. The key to making power is the cam and heads. which was not listed. Didn't you tell the guys at DSS what your setup and goals are so they could build the short block right?

ok im sorry i left a few things out lol the heads i curently have are patriots i no there junk so didnt list them im looking into the rhs 200cc with 58 cc chamber and a trick flow stage 5 cam 595 lift i have two intakes one is a parker funnelweb the other is a performer i have a holley 750dp carb and this car isnt a street car as far as suspenion itll hook in a ice storm lol i was running a 306 w 5 speed launching at 4000 side steping clutch id wouldnt spin and the dss motor was bout as a shortblock used had about 2500 miles got it for 250 bucks thats why i didnt tell them my goals

the reason im swapping things around is last season i coulnt get into the low 13 w a 306 and a 5 spd something wasnt right and i think it was mostly in those patriot heads or maybe the intake thats why im asking for opinions from some who have done what im looking for

You can do it no problem.

Check this combo out, pump gas 363 with rhs 215cc heads, knocking on the 9 second door on motor. I think the funnelweb is a good choice, if i were building something similar to your setup id try a port matched super victor.

Now, this guy definitley has his stuff together, but it shows the potential of a combination that WORKS.

You could still run 10's with a hydraulic roller and a mild street strip combo. Ive spun unmodified factory hydraulic roller lifters to 7500 rpms with a cleveland performance center camshaft, and his recommendation on valve springs. My car has run a best of 10.67 at 126mph on motor, with a 345'', r block based motor. The basic rundown of the setup was twisted wedge 205 CNC ported heads, TFS Box R intake, and the cleveland performance cam as mentioned above. I went a best of 11.02 with an off the shelf comp cam and drag radials. The car went 9.92 at 136mph on a 150 shot. Race weight is about 3350 with me, and a full tank of gas.

90lx you ran a 10.65 with your 345 and your motor is in a different league. He has a very basic 331 with heads equivalent to Gt 40's. IMO!! Those heads are his bottle neck. My 331 had 165s on it and I think if I went 185s I could have gotten maybe a 10.9 with a gd 60 foot time. There's nothing wrong with these numbers and its a solid street car, but the AOD is different than a C4. I personally have never seen an AOD (somewhat stock ford) tranny dip into the 10s. Minot saying it hasn't happened I'm just not a believer.

@stang87 with forged internals and girdled I would go more than a 250 shot and your motor is on borrowed time. Anything over 500hp is a risk. That said I had a virtually stock motor with a 250 shot and got 40k miles out of it and sold it to someone who drove it for years. You never know.

thats cool but has a lot more motor than i can afford at this time i want to build a 363 maybe next year

Its really nothing much crazier than you are doing, it has more cubic inches, but its a very basic build, even has an off the shelf cam.

He is talking about getting RHS cylinder heads, my motor isnt in a different league either. The top end of my motor is straight out of the summit catalog with the exception of the camshaft. There is nothing radical about it. Guys have gone 10's on motor with stock bottom end 302's. No reason a 331 couldnt do it.

Im not gonna argue the AOD point cause the OP doesnt have one, ill just say its been done.

I think your goals are easily achievable with a power adder (nitrous). They can also be achieved n/a but at a much great expense! I personally would not be buying an off the shelf cam for that motor and would look to a custom grid once you have nailed down your head selection (Trickflow FTW). Understand that forged internals are great but you will be at the limit of your stock block, girdle or not. I have personally seen motors of this nature last many seasons deep in the tens and have also seen them last several passes before they are flower pots. (just food for thought) If you do decide to go the nitrous route understand that it can be very safe. This requires a considerable learning curve. For the most part a smaller shot 125-150 is forgiving, but only to an extent. We live in reality and Fast and Furious is far from that. A 300 shot or 250 for that matter is very serious business and is NOT forgiving. Either way I would recommend hours of research from reputable sources or seeking professional help in setting it up. Ask srtthis, pistons become a hot commodity and they keep several spares as far a I know. ;)

If you do decide to try and attain this N/A then you will be spinning this motor higher rpm wise and will certainly need a very nice top end to support it. Let us know where you think you're going with the build. Pictures too, we all like pictures here!
