I use the H3 100 watt bulbs in my fog's and it made a huge diff in side lighting (talk about pissin off the cars in front of me in the next lane ), but it sure lights up side street signs etc etc.
I did though re-wire them so their on their own circuit so I can turn them on without having to turn the main lights on, AND to take the load off the factory switch & circuit. If you don't do it this way or similar, you will burn out the switch or wiring to it. Also, don't try and run an 80/100 watt bulb for the headlights, The plug will eventually melt. The Sylvainia Silver Stars are the brightest bulbs you can use with the stock wiring setup.
I too, am using the H3 100 watt bulbs, as well as rewired the foglight switch to work independently from the headlights. I plan on getting new headlight and foglight lenses, as they are 5 years old and a little hazed. Despite the lenses, my Sylvania Silverstars and 100 watt foglights definitely light up the night. When I get my diamond clears/diamond foglights from 50resto.com, the output will be insane. I would not recommend using the 100 watt bulbs without the rewiring fix. Mine would click off after 10 mins. with just the stock foglight bulbs and the headlights on at the same time.
You guys didn't run a thicker gauge wire or anything to the foglights??? Rather you just did the GT foglight fix which allows a relay to handle the current/voltage draw from the foglights as opposed the factory headlight switch.
The factory headlight switch now acts only as a switch to turn the relay on.
The stock wiring is good enough for a single 100 watt bulb, but not two. The stock bulbs are 55 watts each, 110 watt total. The current draw for 110 watts at 12 volts is 9.1 amps, and the wire size is 18 gauge. The 18 gauge wire is a little small, since the current rating is 5-8 amps for the 5-10 ft of wire in the circuit.
Two 100 watt bulbs draw 16.6 amps which is way too much for the stock wiring.
For any fog light change, I recommend that you do the following:
1.) Use a relay to eliminate overloading the stock wiring.
2.) Draw power for the lights from a fused battery connection.
3.) Use the stock wiring from the switch to power only the relay coil.
4.) Use 12 gauge wire. These changes alone will make the fog lights much brighter without changing the bulbs. The 12 gauge wire is good for 20 amps, and is what I would recommend for using two 100 watt fog light bulbs.
