14# KB + Forged Engine GT = waste of time?

If you were planning on going forged, do you think using a 14# KB kit would be a waste of potential on a forged gt or would you recommend getting something like Kidd's NOVI setup and running 20-something pounds of boost? Would a 14# KB last longer than a 20-something# centrifugal, or is longevity just no more an issue on forged engines?

if you had the heads worked over with cams and a porting job along with a killer tune intake and exhaust mods, the 14# kit would get well over 500rwhp. I'm sure its been done by someone though.

well I'd just be lookiing for the maximum power that I could possibly take advantage of in a forged engine. I can envision a KB kit with heads & cams hitting close to 600rwhp, and I think Kidd's stroker is a good landmark example of what a supercharged stang should be @ 663rwhp. I guess the ultimate goal for an engine like this would to be able to hand 90% of the 03 cobras on the street their a$$es.

Why only 90% ? More like 100% because their arent enough aftermarket parts out for them 03 Cobras....yet.

the local shop here just put an stock pullied s trim on gt with champion ported heads and one of vt's cams set ups along with all of the supporting mods(i think just an intake plenum no bullitt)and pulling a buttload of timing and a fat fuel curve it was all over 500rwhp. I think it was hitting 10lbs of boost. With a few more pounds of boost, leaning it out a bit more and adding in some timing just think what it could do.

before h/c it was putting down high 300s for rwhp

has anyone seen the MM&FF issue with the "project ice box" Vortech'd GT? (the one with the tacky flag vinyl) Heads & Cams + 12psi Vortech put down about 540rwhp... but that was after a pulley change due to the 2psi loss from the new H/C combo.

Do you think this drop in boost would happen w/ the KB as well? I just don't want to hit something like 540rwhp and realize that I have absolutely no hope of ever increasing power in the future.

You would get a drop in boost with a motor running ported heads, cams, full exhaust, etc with any blower. The problem is that KB doesn't make a pulley smaller than their "14 psi" pulley for the little 1.7 so you'd have to have something custom made and then deal with the belt slip. They have a 2.2 in the works that "supposedly" just made over 600 hp on a engine dyno running a shm motor.

Fwiw, I ran a 1200 cfm T Trim (17 psi) when my car made 663 rwhp, not a novi.:)

I believe T&J is putting a car together right now with a KB, 5.0 Stroker, ported heads, cams, the whole nine yards, so you might keep your eye out for those results.

its your ride, you have to decide... but when you are talking about 20+ lbs of boost, you are talking about astronomical amounts of power... more than I would want on a street ride. I say, just because you can go nuts with the power, doesn't always mean you should... the rest of your car is going to take a severe beating if your pumping out 700 lbs of tq... just something to think about.

wasnt there a car they already did? i know i read about a kb powered 2v somewhere that was putting down some power.

Yes, ralan made 507 rwhp/56? rwtq with a VT 5.0 longblock at 14 psi. I meant (I wasn't specific enough) that T&J has a car that they built the motor and ported the heads on that is getting a KB. Two of them, I believe. If I'm not mistaken ralans car made 500 rwtq by 2800 rpm.

Agreed.

The kenne bell gt that was there (laser red) put down some nice numbers (low 500's) so there is potential but I would wait for the 2.2 if you wanted to really turn up the wick on a built motor.
Did that car have ported heads though or just a built shortblock?

Btw, 500 rwhp= plenty of juice to get into the 10s......

*EDIT* Nevermind, I think that car did have ported heads on it but not a stroker. I don't know what "stage" the heads are though.

I am pretty sure they are stage 2 heads but I could be wrong. Jeff put it together so fast I couldn't look :nice:
