Hello, im new to the forums and i have a 1966 mustang. Not many mods but a few. Its a 289 with a Edelbrock carb and intake , has a cam but im not sure on specs , stock heads, 3.80s in the rear 8" , tranny is automatic but it slips from 2nd to Drive for some reason.

Now what im wanting is basically something to hotrod around on the weekends. It used to be my daily driver with 16,000 miles on rebuild. I dont drive it as much and i have another car to drive to and from work ( i drive it sometimes) Rarely ever driven on highway anymore. I want it quick from light to light maybe something equivilent to 12s in the 1/4 or 8s in the 1/8?

So with my setup now plus heads, diferent cam and a better suspension setup could i be close to that or do i have a long ways to go?

Thanks,
Mike

Keeping the C4? 5spd? 4spd? 4spd auto? budget?

Caltracks and adjustable shocks, and a set of subframe connectors would be the ticket for suspension mods, coupled with I6 springs.

Engine mods would be directly related to budget.

Yes keeping the c4. Budget not really, more like a timelimit before i can start spending money. I dont want to spend a crazy amount. I dont want it supercharged or anything like that just more strictly motor.

Oh yea and another question i seen in another thread about the front sway bar and how if you take it off it transfers weight better. How would that be on handling part? Like i said i dont drive it on highway just mainly around town. And if i were to take it off would it be alright?

Unhooking the swaybar is a quick job. I'd get the car setup then do that. It does help, but you may not like the handling, these things aren'g Ferrais to begin with.

Custom cam (I'd get a solid flat tappet), Stealth intake, keep the carb, Ford Duraspark dizzy hooked to an MSD 6AL, headers, duals, H-pipe.

If you have $1400 get a set of AFR165 heads, or for less than 1k find some used Trickflow 1.94-valved heads. A set of ported iron heads, stock, 351W, or Ford GT40, would also do the trick.

Keep the compression 10:1-10.5:1 with aluminum heads and 9.5-9.8:1 with iron heads.

I'd say a 12.8 is possible with good suspension and a properly built motor, but unless you start from scratch and design a combo to squeeze every last erg of HP, most people can't make more than 350hp from a 302, which puts a limit to the ETs.
