First off im 21 years old. 7 years ago my grandfather and I spotted a 68' coupe roadside for sale and we bought it. The plan was to do a frame up. We started by completely stripping the car. 4 years ago he passed on and the car hasnt been touched since. Emotional reasons i guess my father always finds other excuses. Well im ready to start on it, but im on my own cause my father works out of state so hes there pretty much for ideas.

As she sits now, shes down to the bare unibody, which is nearly flawless except for the few pin holes in the lower quarters. Underside has already been painted and interior has been rhinocoated for less vibrations. The car was originally an Auto I6 but after a quick discussion we decided that will not due since my father and i are both power nuts. I have a 9" lincoln rear end in her and beefier front control arms, all powdercoated, right now shes just sitting on a car hauler begging to be worked on.

Now to my point, quite honestly im completely lost as to where to go now, it seams like putting in a roll cage, and subframe connectors would be the next step followed by the bodywork and primed. But this is my first restoration so im at a loss.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on where i should go, any questions just ask. I think its time to get her done because if my grandfather saw how little work is done he`d be fairly disappointed to say the least. I`d like to finish it for him.

Thanks

Well, any job including a roll cage can't really be considered restoration, that's more like street rod or racer. You don't need a cage unless you plan to go to the track, a cage is really impractical in a street driven car.

Fix anything that will require welding now. Do the body up to guide coat.

Then detail the undercarriage and engine compartment, and install the running gear and drivetrain.

Install the headliner, front and rear glass, and paint the car, in that order.

Install the interior.

thank you i guess its more of a resto mod then, as for the undercarriage and engine bay what more needs to be done to them, other than painted, they are gloss black at the moment.

Also, I dont think you want to install the subframe connectors until the car is sitting on all 4 wheels with its fully assembled weight. Then the subrame connectors can be welded.

Thank you for your input, i just figured i would post some pictures of exactly where we are at so u can get an idea of the project...

thats what the color looks like when its cleaned just put that to show that the paint is not old or anything

this is just a quick coverage of the car

It looks like you have a nice platform to start with. It looks like the rust wasn't bad.

What color is it going to be?

I'm just curious, what are your plans for the drivtrain?

No there was pretty much no other body problems with the car except whats in the pics, frame was clean along with the floorpans. As for the color since its both my fathers and my car... its like an argument waiting to happen, we both are kind of partial to candy apple, but i would prefer dark cherry, and as for the drivetrain thats all up to him... we have a lincoln versailles 9" rear right now, and a 289 bored over to a 302 that we are going to have redone, everything else is in the wind.
