Getting parts together to start my engine swap on the mustang. I knew the car needed a new lock and tumbler for the ignition, but now I've seen the actual damaged 'lock', in the column. How hard is it to replace that whole thing? To get the collar off, and fix where the key goes in? I don't have a book for 71. this is my first trip past 1970.

Well, that's $20 for the CD, more like $50 for the book, which I prefer. With the CD, you have to print out the pages you need, if you're like me, because the computer is NOT going on the workbench.

I'd rather not have to buy the manual, I'm trying to maximize the return on this here investment...If it's like a 70, I'll figure it out...

Removing the col lock is the same as the 70.
Removal of the collar takes pulling the TS switch up and loosening the 2 lock down nuts and lift the key rod out of the lock.

Has the PO damaged the mounting for the lock cyl?

My ex-father in law is letting me keep the car at his place, which is not my place, so I can't just run and look, but here is a picture of it, I think I only need to replace the lock and tumbler or maybe shape it a bit with a socket.

Hard to tell form the pic, but it looks like it is not deep enough for tumbler.
Best to measure the replacement for depth.
If it is, then some minor work on the collar may be the easiest fix.
