I've heard some of the big names in car resto tv series' talk about it like it's some sort of special thing. Almost snobbishly, like they're extra hip because they're going to "save" the original look of the vehicle by clear coating rust.

I, personally think it's a case of lazy *ss on their part because of the amount of work it takes to really restore a car. In spite of what @Noobz347 said in a previous post. It's not that difficult to keep the rust and keep it from spreading a whole lot more.

I better understand the concours guy wanting to use the old paint systems to duplicate what it was like from the factory (even though those paint systems of old are crap compared to the cheapest of modern paints). At least that guy is trying to create the illusion that he has a car that was put away and kept in pristine condition. Though he really didn't, he might get a trophy at a car show for having the best looking original underpowered, bad handling, archaic ride of the show. He could put that trophy on his night stand at night and watch it as he goes to sleep.

The old cars that were put away when they were new, they're the real rarity. The ones that have the real original equipment on and in them. With the paint that hasn't been weathered to hell.

But it's a free country. People can like that patina look, and I'll support them, concours is pretty cool for no other reason than how incredibly anal you must be to dûplicate the original car. These are great things.

Fact is, something like project cheaper sleeper from 5.0 magazine was pretty cool (remember, they got that car for $1K as well). Taking a piece of crap looking car and using it to thrash the unsuspecting smart *ss in his BMW eek really is pretty entertaining! Though I wouldn't necessarily consider it to be cheaper after they dropped that short block in it.

if this car wasn't as "rare" as it is, that might be an interesting thing to do to mine.


As it is though, my poor blue car is destined for several hundred hours of straightening, primering, etc.. and will unfortunately be a stunning shade of blue with an ultra trick paint used on the trim and accents. I will probably block out the clear coat and recoat it as well.

It will be driven for a year or so in it's current rust bucket condition though. It'll even look worse, if that makes anyone feel better because I'll be putting salvage bumpers, a right door, a right fender, and a trunk lid that will probably be all sorts of colors. My neighbors will hate me and will probably demand privacy fences in my front yard.
