1985 Mustang GT Battery Wiring and Grounds

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1985 Mustang that at some point was converted to a 1985 Mustang GT 5 speed with a carburetor by the previous owner. The wiring is kind of all over the place and I need some help with the wiring of the battery. Right now the negative wire going from the negative battery terminal is connected to one of the bolts that bolts the alternator to the alternator bracket, not the chassis. This doesn't seem right? I bought the factory 1985 battery ground wire that has a connection in the middle, I think it is supposed to be connected to the engine block, but where? Does anyone have a 1985 that can tell me or show me where I am supposed to connect the negative battery wire?

Also I bought the factory 1985 positive battery wire and it seems too long, can someone please take a picture of their 1985 battery wiring? Sometimes I wonder if the battery is even in the right place in the engine bay. It's on the passenger side front, just behind the headlight.

On my 83.......My positive cable has a bracket halfway down the cable that attaches to the front of the pass side of the block then runs down under the exhaust manifold to connect to the starter...
Early foxes batteries are on the pass side of the engine compartment...

Your battery is in the correct location.... passenger side, right behind the headlight.

Regarding the negative battery cable.... the carbed 85's have a 1-year only cable.... it has an actual additional ground connection about halfway down it's length (which is in addition to the computer ground quick disconnect). I'm not sure where that "center ground strap" exactly goes... but I'll certainly look next time I'm at the location where my 85 is at and try and see where that ground strap connects.

Regarding your positive battery cable.... I assume you're talking about the battery to solenoid cable. It's pretty short.... 16" comes to mind, but I'll need to measure the length of my supposedly "correct length" cable next time it's convenient to me to verify the exact length.

Which positive battery cable did you get? And how long is it?
