1989 Motor Trend shootout

Real world weight is in the 3150 lb range, without driver. My LX Hatch was 3160 lbs.

Newer cars handle better, are faster in a straight line, more efficient, get better gas mileage, ride better, brake better, safer, etc.

With these improvements, you are going to get some weight increases.

Well worth it to me...

I agree the wieght seem a little low. With all the fiberglass I have installed I'm just under 3000lbs. Thats doors hatch and hood. I do have a 10 point roll bar however.

That is a cool article. That is when cars were just cars. No toys, no gadgets, just get in and go. Sometimes I wish I could have had my license in that era. Everything was afforadable as well.

Haha, no surprises there. 0-60 and 1/4 is up there and everything else is lagging.

Still to this day a great bang for your buck. Quick little toys to be had for under 3000 bucks usually.

And the notch is even lighter!

Mine weighs in at 2840lbs :nice:

And Ive seen stock AOD's pull low 15's in the 1/4. So don't act like it's something totally out of the ordinary

Your CT should read "MR. RIGHT"

If an AOD can run low 15s that only backs up my statement about the 5 speed they tested only running low 15s. You should know as well as anyone that just because a magazine said so, doesn't mean that's true.

some of those drag times are sub par.....I've got a muscle mustangs and fast fords from 1988 and with a 1988 lx hatch with a five speed ran a 14.30 and a couple of 14.40's....the na 300zx time is also way off, NA Z32's will run DANGEROUSLY close to a 14 if driven good...

For once we agree! :D

There's too many factors to take into account. The biggest I would think is the track prep. All these poeple that run low 14's in stock trim race on a sticky ass starting line.

And what was the temp when they tested? Too many factors to take into account my friend! :p

On a different day, different track and with a different driver I'm sure all of the manual cars would run better (although clearly the LX would get more benefit from better traction than most of the others). The article was about more than 1/4 times so I'm sure they weren't trying to wring out every possible tenth. Take it with a grain of salt like any other mag time
