Hi I just did a head gasket swap and my exhaust header bolt broke. Pulled the head back off and started drilling into the bolt. Then the bit I tried to use to turn the bolt out snapped inside. None of my drill bits are getting through the metal now. Any ideas on how to get it out? Thanks.

Also would having one of the bolts missing creak any exhaust leak problems?

Yes you will have a leak without it. If the head is off, I would take it to a machine shop. I'm sure they could get it out and it shouldn't cost too much.

What type of head is this? Is the head off?

take the head to a machine shop before you do any more damage to the head- especially if it is aluminum. You will probably need a helicoil insert.

Since the head is already off I vote taking it to a machine shop too. The amount they charge is probably going to be equal to how much you'd need to spend on specialty bits for this DIY job. The machine shop will get it right the first time too. Try not to over tighten your header bolts, they don't need much torque. If the bolts are old then get new ones. Good luck.

Excellent advice. Make that someone else's problem.
