1990 GT Turbo Install

I think going with a chinese turbo is just rolling the dice. I doubt many on here have experience with this type of turbo. I recommend googling that specific turbo and checking out the turboforums for advice from more turbo-focused people.

I dont know anything about that turbo but, for my setup, Im going with 42 lb injectors, Snow meth injection, Turbosmart Waste gate & blow off valve & boost controller. I will be using a Mallory ignition box that can retard timing based on boost. For tuning, I have the TWEECER RT. I got my turbo from Squire Turbo Systems (STS) The guy I talked to seemed very knowledgeable & helped my put a package together based on my HP goals. They would be a good place to get info also.

I've had friends buy ebay turbo's for their SRT-4 and make good numbers and not have a minutes trouble out of the turbo itself. I say if its a budget build, go for it.

Getting a turbo off of ebay has apparently worked for some, but for others from what I've read the chinese bearings and seals tend to go out almost immediately and are often not the same size as the Garrett parts so they can't be easily replaced. Nevertheless, it's your decision. The fortunate part is that they're cheap, but you also get what you pay for.

Its true you get what you pay for. However, most dont understand the concept of a budget build. Sure you can pay top dollar and get the very best, but, thats not a budget build. Thats an unlimited budget build. I am by no means picking on anybody individually. But, a good example would be when I needed some new upper and lower rear control arms. Everybody said to get the MM, but I am on a budget and picked up the LMR ones for a little over 100 bux. They work great! Far better than stock. I cant imagine that the MM that are 250 bux just for the lowers are 150 dollars better. Even if they are that good, I'm on a limited budget.

Well, I spent a lot on my DBB GT42-76mm turbo for an engine I spared no expense on. I wasn't afraid to buy a $2k turbo to go with a $4k HP kit for my car. I knew what I wanted. I say that to give you context to what I consider to be a budget build. To me a Master Power 70mm turbo is an awesome turbo for a budget build. This turbo will run you around $550, and it's a proven performer with the potential to split a factory block without breaking a sweat. When people ask for my opinion on a good budget turbo for a 5.0, this is my recommendation. You can certainly find cheaper turbos, but you'll be taking a risk.

watch out for the stock block i just split mine in two last week with a 76mm turbonetics at 6psi. Goin with a dart shp and forged internals now.

Ok, for ****s and giggles I did a little research into the turbo you're asking about. Here are the specs

Compressor:
Size: Inlet = 4 3/16"
Inducer = 68.7MM
Exducer = 97.8 MM
Trim = 69,A/R = 0.66
Intake (ID / OD) = 2.25" / 3.25"
Turbine:
Outlet = 4"
Turbo flange = T4
Downpipe flange = 3.5" V-band
Inducer = 87.4 MM
Exducer = 77 MM
Trim = 92
A/R = 1.05

I'm sure that you can switch out the exhaust housing for differing A/Rs. The general consensus, to my surprise, is that they actually don't have the typical issues that china turbos do. Several people have had good luck with them.

That said, this is a big turbo for a stock 5.0. So, it will likely be lazy/unresponsive until you get into the upper RPMs. Something like an MP-T70 will spool faster and be more suitable for a low c.i. low rpm motor like a stock-blocked 5.0.

Anyway, it doesn't look quite as bad as I expected. Check this thread out. I didn't read everything, but started on page 16 and read it through. Looks like it's been tested and is working in most applications. Some info on gt45 y2004k china turbo.(new pics)

At the power level you're looking for you should be perfectly fine with 42lbs/hr injectors. Beyond the range of what 42s will support you're going to be looking at a more expensive fuel system (rails, lines, low-impedence drivers/standalone, etc...) Plus, guys push those injectors over 500rwhp where you're going to be flirting with splitting the block, building a driveline, etc...
