Hey everyone, so I just replaced my fuel pump and fuel filter as there was low fuel pressure. Now when I try to start the car gas spews out all over the ground, when looking at the tank it seems like it might be coming from in between the tank and the cover but after taking it back down and checking there was no cracks or anything. Area around fuel pump seemed a little wet but not very wet compared to the amount of gas everywhere. Not sure exactly what the problem is, the grommet was intact when I took the tank off, fuel lines are properly connected.

It sounds like you didn't quite install the pressure line on the pump hanger assembly. A simple crack in the tank or an issue with the filler grommet wouldn't cause fuel to spray anywhere since the tank itself is not pressurized. Gasoline tends to evaporate quickly, so I wouldn't attach any significance to the fact that the area around the pump doesn't seem wet.

Only other thing I could think of would be damage to the pressure line somewhere along the run.

Keep the tank dropped and have someone cycle the key while you are back there. Obviously with the proper PPE. I would say the leak is between the fuel pump hanger and the outlet of the filter. If you damaged one of the connectors do not loose your head. They have them at parts stores and most likely all you need to do is rob the seals out of a new one and install them in your old one.

So after taking the tank back down and checking the new pump with the old one I can tell that the part of the hanger that leads to the filter is smaller than the original one. My thought is that because of this size change it’s not connected properly. What are your thoughts on this, should I/ can I change out the filter outlet to the proper size? Or is the size not the problem and do you think the connector is just damaged?

What year car is this? The 94/95 cars have a 3/8" outlet and the 86-93 cars have a 5/16" outlet.
It’s a 94, the new pump hangar pressure line port is definitely smaller than the original. when putting the connector on it has a lot of freedom in movement, I’ve taken it off and back on multiple times so I know it’s seated the best it can be. I’m wondering if maybe I just need the connector to be one or two sizes down so it fits properly. (Sorry if my terminology is off or wrong I’m still very new to this so I don’t know all of the linguistics)

You need to get the correct fuel pump hanger and swap your pump over to it. You may find a bracket used or you can buy them new. I believe 1994-1997 are the same and this includes the V6 and V8’s.

I found this out when I was going to bigger fuel lines on my Coupe. Thought the 94/95 hanger would work but they kept the return line 1/4". Ended up buying the Pro-M one with 3/8" tube on both the feed and return lines with 6AN connections.
