my 1995 mustang had its transmission rebuilt and a shift kit installed last year ( automatic), last night i was driving home and it started to slip in overdrive it got to the point where i couldn't even drive it,I pulled over and checked the fluid level, its fine, I drove it the rest of the way home with my od.button on so it wouldn't go into overdrive and I had no problems with slipping, was wondering if any one had any info, so I could go back to the shop and no exactly what was going on.. thanks a lot

What mods do you have done to your car? It sounds like you toasted your od band. I would call the company that rebuilt it for you. I rebuilt the trans thats in my car 2.5 years ago with a stock kit and it runs just fine and I run the crap out of the trans in od.

all I have done is cat back exhaust and a cold air intake. I have only put 6000 km on the tranny, no after they fix it what will happen after another 6000 kms the same thing or what.

it should be on the tb by the throttle cable if you drive in od to long with the cable down you will fry the transmission or at least od it happened on my friends fox and his crown vic

thanks guys
I checked my kick down cable by my throotle cable, it seems like when i pull the cable a little bit that it's off inside the tranny, if I drive with my od off it won't affect the tranny will it thanks

I think the cable your messing with is for cruse controll. If the shop is going to fix it for free then let them do it and extend the warranty. I wouldent pay the shop who did it before to work on it. I would find someone else to do it.

The OD band is known to be very weak in these cars. You aren't affecting your trans by driving with OD off, but you are certainly affecting your gas mileage. Around town on roads with a speedlimit of 40-45 or lower, I generally drive without OD on.

o.k I guess It's the overdrive band, should I get the shop to get me an aftermarket band of some kind so this problem doesn't happen again, any suggetions on what kind of band to get, I was reading about a kevlar or something. I have been reading that the overdrive bands are weak in these transmissions , how many bands are in the tranny one for each gear or just one. that does all gears?

Stay away from kevlar. It is made to be abused and can slip with out being burned up. The problem is when a kevlar band slips it generated alot of heat and thats bad for a trans. You can use a standard od ban and get a longer servo that will apply more pressure to the band and allow it to take more. I would go to www.tccoa.com and under tech go to tranny and read the stuff there.

I WENT TO THE TRANNY SHOP TODAY BUDDY ORDERED SOME SILINOIDS HE SAID THAT THERE PROBABLY SCREWED, HE SAID HOPEFULLY THAT FIXES IT BUT I'M WOORIED ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THE OVERDRIVE BAND IF IT STILL IS GOOD AFTER HE IS DONE REPLACING THE SILINOIDS, IHAVE ONLY PUT 6000 KMS SENSE THE REBUILD

If you had 1-2-3 gear then I don't think it's the solinoid s/p. The solinoid has two built in to it. One is called ss1 and the other is called ss2. When you get 1st gear ss1 in on, seconder gear none are on, 3rd gear ss2 is on, 4 gear/od ss1-ss2 are on. If you have all gears but the od slips then I don't think it could be the solinoid. Also if the valve body isnt tightend down to the right spec it can get cross leaks and cause problems.

I hate to say it...

I had two trannies fail exactly the same way. It would slip out of OD, but would try to shift back in after several seconds. In both cases, it took a tranny rebuild to fix the problem. :( The solenoids are only there for the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts, and have nothing to do with OD.

As long as the tranny's under warranty, I'd suggest letting them make a few attempts at fixing the problem. Once their attempts fail, insist on a new rebuild. You may also want to ask them what they reused during the last rebuild, and/or an itemized list of what was replaced last time.

If they rebuild your tranny again, most definitely insist on a new warranty. If it's a reputable shop, they should have no problem with it.

The solenoid controll the shifts and what gear is held. Like a said when ss1 in on and ss2 is off you have 1st gear. When they are both off you have second gear. Wehn ss2 is on and ss1 is off you have 3dr gear. when both ss1 and 2 are on you have 4th gear aka overdrive. If you didn't have the holding pressure of both ss1 and ss2 you couldent have od. If you have a good 1 gear and a good holding second gear i don't see the solenoid being the problem i see it either in the valve body or the band it self. So if you can explane how the solenoid dosent have anything to do with od you let me know.
