the GR-2s are good ones to use. they dont have as much gas pressure as the gas adjusts do, so they will provide a smoother ride.
A smooth as ride as possible and no other suspension mods? At the risk of being ripped, it still leads me to Monroe Sensatrack. With a 4 cyl up front, they will be a good improvement over stock without the performance harshness risk. A Mustang still will not ride like a Lincoln, but they can make even our mini van ride well without floating, either empty or packed to the ceiling.
Nothing wrong with KYB quality. But from my recent experiences with them, you may find them harsher than you want. No floating, but the basic front KYB struts we got ride like a lumber wagon. Good for handling, and good for rattles and shaking your kidnew stones loose too.

Buy the cheapest OEM replacement with a lifetime warranty. We are talking a DD 4 banger here. No need to overthink it.
