2.3l engine Schematics

I need a little help.

I'm a senior in high school and i'm doing an independent study class with a 3-D modeling program, and my curriculum is to "build" a 2.3l Carbed mustang engine. I have an engine that i'm currently taking apart, and piece by piece i'm going to draw the engine on my computer, to scale, and hopefully have a working 3-D model of my engine.

The problem is that i only have a Chiltons service manual as my guide. I was wondering if anybody had a engine schematic, or knows were i can find one, online or where ever. the service manual is good but a schematic would help a hundred times more.

My son did a similar thing with the "Revell" plastic model kit of the "Visible 4 cyl turbo"

It might be easiest to find one for cheap, $50-150 or so, running or not, and take it apart to measure.

The Ford FRPP or SVO catalog has the major engine dimensions in a table in it, or it used to. You can find many dimensions for valves, pistons, etc, in aftermarket parts catalogs.

Hello Ben,
I have done a fair amount of CAD modeling in school and for work. What program are you using? This is a fairly large project to take on. There will be some hard to find dimensions that could hold you up, so using an actual motor would probably be your best bet for time efficiency.

I would love to hear more about the project.

I actually have a 1986 2.3 engine that i'm going to use. i only wanted a schematic to help me with the final assembly on the computer.

i'm using Autodesk Inventor 10 Professional. It's a branch of the Cad programs

I have a ton of respect for anyone who takes on a project like this. I am not very familiar with any of the Autocad systems (I have primarily used CATIA V5 and Pro-E) so I won't be much help with the technical aspects of the cad program.

I have designed a functioning suspension from scratch though, using V5. The biggest things I learned with that project were to use support geometry, and to not get hung up on the details of all the various components. For example, when you model the rods, make sure that any relevant dimension will be simple to change. As a general rule, always define the most basic, intrinsic properties of the part first, then base all other features on the base features.

Thanks Jason, but I don't deserve all of the credit for this project. I realized that this project was going to be huge, so i have a friend who's wants to help.
Autodesk Inventor is fairly quick to work with. with only one sketch, one revolve and a few fillet's to clean it up, and i made a the basic valve in a few minutes. obviously i would take more time to make it to scale, and proportionaly correct, and change to color, but other wise this program is really user friendly.

Unfortunetly I won't have the class until january, so there wont be much to report on till then. I'll probable build some pieces before the class starts,but once i start i'll deffinetly post the progress of the engine.
