Just hunt for one of the above intakes I listed. Lots of good used ones out there, just takes a little hunting. Shop around and you'll get one cheap, many times for far less than $150

i just searched ebay, theres a messed up one for $100, other than that, $148 plus shipping is what they want on ebay. thats why im just buying a new one, pointless to try to save $5 by using ebay.

Summit has the Performer RPM for a 289-302 non EGR for 156.88.

Part number EDL-7121

So I guess who has the best frt for ya. Summit is free ground shipping.

Yep, you'll get about 20HP more but you'll feel it when the rear barrels kick in. What kinda carb are you considering? I stopped messing with Holleys and went to Edlebrocks. I have a manual 600 on top of a Performer RPM with a 1" phenolic spacer between the two. Also an open element air cleaner to help it breathe better. You might consider a dual performance exhaust (with crossover) and Pertronix drop in unit first. Plus a $25.00 Crane recurve kit for the dizzy. Then you'll be able to take more advantage of the intake you are considering. Remember the stock 4bbl A code had higher compression, so you will probably not get the advertised 25HP difference between the two engines. 20 you probably will get, but only if your engine is kept well tuned. But the 4bbl swap is definately one of the first things people do to improve their engines. Oh, yeah, forget about the stock 4bbl intake. People have said they are almost as good as the aluminum aftermarket ones, but that is not my experience. Also, buy a new one if you can. Swap meet stuff is fun but if it is not square, you won't seal and therefore have a piece of unusable aluminum on your shelf......

Out of the dozens of used aluminum intakes I've bought over the years, I've yet to find one that didn't fit correctly. It's easy to spot those that have been abused, just steer clear of those.

If you don't understand recurving a distributor, then don't bother with that kit. Messing with that will get you into trouble in a hurry. It's meant to let the advance come in faster, but I've never found a need to do this.

i have the dual exhaust, cobra air cleaner AND petronix ignitor and petronix flamethrower, so im all set.

btw, hearne, is it true the a to c code motors had different compression? I thought they were the same, that the k was the one with more compression.

headers will be a big help also if you start flowing more on your intake

and before you buy a carb, call edelbrock and ask them what size (they're going to tell you 500 cfm)
and having bought a 600 cfm, i recomend the 500 cfm one

what id do if i were you:
performer rpm intake
500 eddel carb
headers
pertronix ignitor
hiperformance coil

these things will give you a good start for decent performance

According to one of the books, from 65-67 the 2 bbl had 9.3 to 1 , the 4 bbl had a little more at 10.0 to 1 , anf the Hi-po was yet a little higher at 10.5 to 1.

The motor is nothing but a big vacuum pump. While improving the flow on the intake side will help, the real benefits won't kick in until you get a better cam and exhaust.

That being said, you will still see gains from a straight 4 bbl install, mostly on the top end. The Edelbrock Performer intake is $139.95 at Summit. At that price, not much need to go used. The nice thing to get out of this swap is an electric choke. Remember , if you have an automatic to get a carb with the Ford automatic kickdown linkage.

I agree with D. all the way...
Go with a more aggressive dual plane, stay away from Performer 289/302 and Weiand Action series intakes, also the Holley version of the stock 4v intake. Any other RPM, Stealth, F4B (or it's many variations) would be perfect.
Stick with a smallish vacuum secondary Holley.
Don't do the 500 cfm 2v, your mileage and throttle response on a stock engine will go right into the crapper.
If you set up a vacuum 4v right, you will gain mileage and performance. You should NOT feel the secondarys kick in if it is set right. When the engine takes the secondarys as needed, it will be so smooth that you will not notice.
With just intake and carb, you might see 10-15 hp IMO.
The great big gains with this mod will come with other mods.
FWIW, if I was you, I would do LT headers either 1st, or at the same time as the 4v. Together, you should see 30-40 hp with just these two mods on a stock engine.
Also, go for used intake and headers. Intakes don't wear out and you can see any broken parts/threads before you buy them. Headers are good unless dented badly or rusted through.
Buy a new carb. Don't skimp here... and get a tuning manual with it.
Good luck
Dave

600 cfm is pretty big for a 289 unless you're revving the crap out of it, I agree. If you get too large of a carb for your motor/rpm range, your off-idle throttle response will stink.

Keep in mind what your future plans are, though. If this is just the first set of mods, I think you should open up the exhaust first or save money to do more at one time. If you get headers and heads, you may want a different intake. Just think the whole path through before you buy anything. If you don't mind buying this one and then buying another later, great. Just make it a decision, not something to regret later.

what would u think for a 302 with headers and 2" exhaust that dumps under the rear axle. With a performer rpm intake. Ive got the petronix ignitor and flamethrower for ignition. 500cfm or 600cfm???

It is hard to overcarb a motor with 600 cfm. They can be set up to work just fine on a mild 289.

Keep in mind that with a vacuum secondary 600 4 bbl carb the primary side is the same cfm as the carb he now has, so the throttle response will not "stink", it should be the same as he now has. Only difference, is he'll have an extra 300 cfm in capacity if his motor needs it. Now if he went with a mechanical sec. carb, that statement about the throttle response could be true ( then again it might improve it, you never know til you try it.)

Not necessrily so, I did this on a stock 69 E330 Club Wagon with a 302 back in the 70's. That carb was perfect for it. Mileage didn't go down the tubes, mostly it stayed the same or improved slightly. Good choice for someone who can't afford or doesn't want the hassle of swapping intakes.

so the vac secondary is when you have a carb that only uses 2 barrels untill needed...so a regular 4 barrel is 4 barrells all the time?

try to find a Edelbrock F4B. Its the predecessor to the Performer series, about as good for much less at the meets. Its a knockoff of the dual-plane Shelby intake.
