I am looking at a 2001 Cobra 23K miles, one owner, non-smoke, original owner. 100% stock and lovingly cared for and in the color I have been looking for. They want $23,500 but I could get for $21,500 - $21,900. Two months remaining on warrantee. I would have to travel 300 miles to get it.
Is this a deal that I should pursue? I could find a cheaper car but condition would probably not be as pristine (and it is in my prefered color).

I would appreciate your opinions and/or advise. Thanks in advance

I paid 20,100 for mine back last Nov with 23,500 miles or so on it. I drove to PA 300 miles or more to get it, more.

It had the starts to my suspension mods done to it.

My warranty is good until Oct yet so I had more left on it when I bought it.

I would work on the price before making that purchase now. I would say 19k maybe no more then 20k for sure.

Im pretty sure 2001 was the year with the ****ty IRS...plus they were underrated and had a fix. Make sure its got the fix before you buy it but personaly i would just go otu and spend alittle more and get a used Mach.

The 99 Cobra had the problems with the intake manifold. Also the IRS on the 99 was 28 spline and the 01 Cobra had 31 spline axles.

id say $20k at most $20.5 would be pushing it, you are talking coupe right? 23.5 is more in line with a vert

For 23 why bother, 03's are going for 25-27. I would never sell myself short like that. Unless you just don't want all that HP that you get out of the good ol' eaton.

Last November I paid $22k for a pristine 01 vert with 6800 miles. I drove 250 miles to get it. (buying a convertible in the winter probably helped) I agree with the other guys, no more than $20k.

i agree, last november a brand new 03 was going for 29.9k

i think the 99/01s will become more desirable as the 03/04 gets older, if the motor has trouble holding up then the 99/01 will be more attractive, if it stays solid then the 99/01s will be less sought after

me personally i wouldnt buy a used 03, too much chance of the previous owner romping on it and the blower doing damage you cant see.

01 is a soild starting point, last of the aluminum blocks, you get the 4v and leather/alacntra interior and irs

good place to start if you are gonna go the blower or n/a route

of course once the 05's hit the remaining 03/04s on the lots will drop like mad so maybe wait til then?

As stated above ... there are less miled 03/04s that are selling mid 20s and Mach 1s new too.

I'd haggle for lower. $20K tops.

The 01s are great cars. If it's pristine and you have looked it over and have that good feeling ..... GO FOR IT!!!!
Just post pics when you get it.

This is incorrect- 99's had the 'fix' and gimp IRS, 01's are gret cars, and even have better seats. Only problem with them is they use the T3650 gearbox. Love it or hate it. Alot of guys have had big issues with those boxes.

I would drive 600 miles for the right car a the right price. You shouldnt let mere driving distance be a deciding factor in your purchase. The price, however, is too high. Even if you got it for 21.5K that's still too much, unless you just HAVE to have the car.. Its only about a grand too high, and that may be worth it to you to get a primo car. Sometimes you do have to pay a bit more to get a guranteed choice car.

I would offer up 20.3k and see if he bites.

I took Snarf's advise and offered 20.3K. The dealer said he would go 20.9K just to wrap up a deal. They have had it since April but the local market is not very big.
It really sounds like a premium condition car from all that he has described. He is willing to allow me have 72 hours for a SVT certified tech to inspect the car for defects or problems. The deal could be cancelled if a major fault is found. The car has a couple of months warantee remaining. If it as premium as he states I think that I will go the 300 miles to inspect and possibly buy. I appreciate all the input and helpful shared knowledge.

IMO, 20.3k is very fair. I wouldn't go higher than 20.5k. If they really want to move the car they'll do 20.5 Good luck.

you said you wouldnt buy an 03 because theres too much of a chance the pre-owner would be romping on it and doing blower damage. Are you kidding me? Ford built the 03 cobra to have it's ass kicked and to KICK ass. As far as the blower, ford uses eaton for a reason. The reason is because it's reliable and a tough son of a bitch every time you turn the key and it was built to last 150000 miles. If someone has an 03 or 04 cobra and doesnt romp on it then they're afraid of it and they need to trade it in for a minivan or some s--t.
