I bought a timing cover and I'm trying to see if anybody knows if this gouging is normal. It looks like inc machine swirls. it's a 2004 mustang 4.6 engine. Thank you

A few possible things happened to it.
Worn thrust bearing causing excessive crankshaft movement.
Balancer wasn't seated all the way or was going bad.
Wrong trigger wheel spacer or lack therof.

Or maybe something I'm not thinking of as well.

So you don't think this is machined this way? I watched two videos on guys replacing there timing chains and when I freeze it when it shows the inside of there cover and it looks like there has it too. It's so weird because this cover has that gouging real thin but it has suril marks like a cnc machine.

So I found a nos one from a guy and I asked him if he would send me a few pics of his and it actually had it too. I found two in my area and went and looked at it and they all had it too. You just don't notice it because of the brownish oil, but when it's new it sticks out. So I have two for a 2000-2004 if anybody looking to buy them, they costed me $275
