2011 Starting problem sometimes

My 2011 GT has a starting problem, sometimes. When I turn the key to start position sometimes it just keeps cranking the engine over but doesn't start. I have to turn the key to off and restart it. Its like it gets stuck in the start position and cranks but doesn't start. and i have to turn the key to off to stop it from cranking or it would just crank and not fire up. Any one ever have this happen?

Yes this has happened to me as well a few times, others on other forums also complain about this.
I would say it happens about once or twice a month.

I have the same problem on my 2011 GT, but its only when I turn the key to the start position and release it back to the run position before the car is actually started. The engine takes a bit longer to start, but it has actually started the three or so time it has happened. Now, I just make sure that I don't release the key before the engine starts, and i have no problems. I hope this helps you guys out. I would hate to see big problems with this.

This is a 'feature' of starting the engine. You turn the key and release. The starter will turn over until the engine starts. For those who's engines take longer or not start at all and have to turn the key off, that may be a seperate issue. The 'feature' is designed into the starting system. Why they did it this way is anybody guess. Should have just put a starter button on the dash...

You are describing the 1 touch start feature - you turn the key and let it go, the engine starts without you having to hold the key in start.
The OP is talking about a different issue where the engine does not start but continues to crank.

The 5.0 V8 has 11:1 compression. It takes a lot of effort to turn that motor over. I just got my car, and I notice it takes a little longer to start up than my old Dodge Ram's 318 did.

I wonder if the high comp ratio could have something to do with it? Is this problem occurring on stock vehicles, or just on vehicles that have been computer tuned? We need more data to get to the bottom of this.

I've had this happen about twice since I have had my '11. I thought it was something I did, but its kinda hard to repeat. Normally my engine fires up just as fast as any other I've owned, actually a little faster than some of them.
When it happened it felt almost as though the key was stuck in the "start" position physically. Because I had to put a little effort into getting it to stop.

dhcolesj described exactly what mine does, sometimes. I turn the key to the start position, the engine cranks, i release the key and it just keeps cranking but doesn't start. Each time this happened, I turned the key to the off position after 2 or 3 seconds of cranking but not starting. Then I start it again and it fires right up. Anyway it goes to the dealership this Thursday, I'll let y'all know what they tell me..

If you are taking it to the dealer just for the starting issue I personally would not bother.
Unless it is repeatable or happens when the vehicle is there the dealer will not do anything.
I pulled codes and found nothing when it happened to me.

I have this problem myself. From time to time it cranks longer then usual before it starts. If I have to guess, the problem is related to fuel pump, or fuel pressure in general. When I turn the key right away it cranks without sufficient fuel pressure. I never see this problem when turn tkey half to ready to let the fuel pump prime before cranking the car

Doesn't seem right

I've had the same problem a half dozen times in the last 8 months of ownership of my '11 5.0. I have to turn it all the way off to start it again. Once it starts it runs rich for a little while like it got too much fuel.

It may very well be the performance tune that's causing a problem. I don't recall having this happen until I had a performance tune (with added Steeda CAI) done to my 2011 Mustang GT in mid March. It doesn't happen often, maybe three times in the past few months.

my 12' GT does this too. It's probably because of the high compression ratio. Not really an issue so idk why everyone is freaking out from it.

Let the gages do their sweep then proceed to start.

Mine did it one time and dealer told me what to do and has not happened again.
