hey guys, i got the 3.73's on the way. so now i was thinking about getting a torsen and the 31 spline axle's. do you think its worth it? I was told that our stock 28 spline rear ends are soft in the middle and after a long while would give. is this true? what do you think? worth doing the torsen and axle's since i'm doing gears? he's charging me a flat rate either way.....

well, the stock axles are fine if you are launching it too hard. stock you are fine, add those taller gears, like those or 410s, and throw in some slicks or DRs and you will go for a ride on the flat bed, even without serious engine mods. you hook hard, launch hard, you snap the axles. depends on what you are going to do with the car, if you are gonna make it fast, go for it. i would do that right now if i were you, snapped axels and broken diffs suck.

if it's a 5 speed, it is not if you will break the stock internals, it is when . . . a note on D/Rs - use a 15" so that you have some sidewall deflection, NOT 17" like I did . . . BOOM, pushed off track with both axles snapped, flatbed arrived at 1 AM, $85 for 6 miles . . .

If your in there already doing the gears, do the axles as well. They have to come out anyway for the gear install.

don't think so, that would be the clutch . . . now, after the clutch . . . well, I haven't broken that yet, so I can't really say . . . did install a d/s loop just in case . . . for my car, probably ripping torque boxes is next . . .

well the guy said flate rate and like rocket man said. he will already be in there. so i think i will just do the axle's and gears at the same time...........also is it worth it to do a "torsen" since i will be doing gears and axle's already? i just would hate to break something or have to go back and do it over again ya know? thanks

ohh also, who makes good 31 spline's? I saw some "mosers" ? Any suggestions? I’m looking for quality but price is a factor.

So what is the physical difference between 28 spline and 31 spline axles? I don't think I have ever hear of the axles stripping at the splines, they always seem to snap in the middle. Are higher spline number axles actually thicker? Is it that the spline sizes are actually the same and the higher spline axles just bigger around?

Axle diameter on a 31 spline is the same as 28.

The size of the spline itself is smaller to allow for more of them.

The biggest advantage to aftermarket axles is that for example Moser's are a custom alloy. Tensile strength is much higher than the cheezy stock ones.

If you play you may have to pay. I broke spider gears and bent a Strange 31 spline axle launching on ET streets. This was with only bolt ons. The stickier the tire, the more you have a chance of breaking something. The Transmission will be next to break, once you beef up the rearend. This is not typical, but as you mod and make more power there are no absolutes not to break.
