I have my 289 at a machine shop. It's the original 289 from my 68 with a 302 block. Should i keep it a 289 with 54cc early 289 heads( not the original heads the car came with) and 9.0 to 1 compression. Or, for a couple hundred dollars more put a 302 crank and rods in it with a comp ratio of 9.5 to 1?

Will the performance gain, if any, be worth the $250 for a 302 crank and rods? I will be using a mild cam with about a .212 duration at .050, stock C4 converter and 3.50 gears.
Thanks Guys!

You won't see $250 worth of gain with a 302 crank and rods.

If the old crank requires extensive work to bring it back to spec, as well as other related parts, it may make more sense to buy new, if the money is available.

In that case, I personally would go bigger. But I'm a performance freak.

The 302 crank and rods are used, but will be reconditioned for $250.

Ok.
Again, I'd put the same reconditioning money towards the bigger crank. More power for the same money.

It may of course require more mods elsewhere that drive the total cost of your engine build up some, but to me that would probably be worth it.

I would think that you would be able to buy a 302 crank and rods for next to nothing. If you lived near me I know that you could. You'll probably need your 289 crank ground and maybe the rods reconditioned so you'd be out only the cost of the 302 crank and rods.
