289 won't start

I have a 289 in my 1970 mustang and I took it out to replace the freeze plugs. Finally, I got it back together and went to start it and it backfires, spits, and pops. I did not take out the distributor or move it. I did take out all spark plugs and spark plug wires. What should I do? I have confirmed the fire order multiple times and am at a loss. Thank you.

You may have the right firing order but is it in the correct direction . The firing order is counter clock wise and not clock wise . .if it is correct ,is there a chance you did rotate the distributor while removing the motor

I just didnt put the number one spark plug in the correct position

Just a question, I thought they ran out of 289's in '67 or '68. Is that a transplant?
