Any idea how much of a difference 3.73 gears would make in a '95 cobra doing 0-60? It has 3.27's in it right now.

Where I'm from there are lot of ricers rolling around and a lot of traffic lights...0-60 is the most fun I have with them.

Hmm... I would argue that on street tires and racing 0-60 on street, keep the gears you have ..otherwise SPPPPPINNN ERRRRRRR too much.

EDIT" oops I was looking at the wrong sig. We have no way to tell b/c we have no information on the mods to your car, no sig.

I don't believe gears help that much on the street, because you just can't hook up good enough to utilize them (from a dig, from a roll is a different story). Actually, the 2.73's I had (stock) were very street racing friendly, as I could barely spin them off the line with a stock motor (unless I was trying, but launching they allowed me to hook well).

And for the record if you can't launch with anything below 3.73's...You need to learn how to drive.

for a guy thats asking 0-60 times, i dont think you probably know how to launch all that well

I've never been to the track, so I don't really worry about 1/4 mile times...But as far as 0-60, my launches are consistent enough for me to be concerned with improving 0-60 times seeing as how I'm already doing really well with what I have. Everyone has their own idea of fun with their car, mine is 0-60 (for now).

This whole issue was brought up because of a cocky Z28 rolling around...The ricers are just a plus.

He never said it can't be done, he was addressing wheelspin factor on street tires. Not everyone is an "expert" driver like yourself. Forget about the Z28 with your mods because he's going to blow you away with your set up anyway.

I am in no way an expert, but I'm comfortable with my abilities. I didn't mean to make anyone upset, I just know that I know people who launch VERY well on street tires with 3.73 gears, I just think that if you have anything below that, launching shouldn't be an issue assuming your rwhp isn't some insane figure. And once I switch them, I'm sure I'll need practice. But like I said, what's fun is different to everyone, mine is 0-60.

That's almost an impossible question to answer. The simple fact that I will hit 60 in second gear makes me wonder if it would do anything in just that range.

Hi Jackie. Ok, I am curious. Your car is a 240horse cobra. How is it you are running those times when stock modular 4.6's Cobras with 65 HP more than your car are running 13.99's? That puts them way behind your car. Of course I am not at all suggesting you are not telling the truth but I am curious. Thanks.

We still are missing the most important peice of info about your car - auto or stick??? Why was this not the first question asked? Come on guys, you are slipping!!!!

Regardless, gears will make a big difference in street driving fun and 0 to 60. I totally agree with you on that as a focus. I am not a 1/4 mile racer, so the only thing I care about is how fun the car is to drive (torque!!), and how quickly I can reach the street legal limits of speed (0 to 60). Plus decent handling is fun too.

Gears can definitely improve your acceleration times. They will get your motor revving up into its peak output range faster - hence better acceleration. Plus, you can't under estimate the SOTP feel of a faster revving motor. - Oh BTW, I wail on it from the dig (see mods in sig) and I still hook up darn good on street tires (Kumhos none the less). So gears do not necessarily kill traction.

But let's take a reality check. If you are talking about strick 0 to 60 times, then your should take care on your gear ratio choice. Make sure you are not creating an extra shift at the 55 to 60 mph range. That is what I got with my 4.10's (5-speed). I have to shift an extra time before 60. So I am sure it costs me an extra half second. Still, I get there in 5.1 seconds (so says the Gtech), so I'm not too concerned. And I focus more on street/tire ripping fun than strict 0 to 60 time.

Hope that helps.

I have a 5 speed.

And to address the issue of a 5.0 Cobra being faster than 4.6, it's all about torque. The hp may be different, but the torque rating is very similar. I have seen magazine write-ups of dyno tests on stock 93-95 Cobras and they're putting out 212rwhp and 268rwt (265hp/335lb/ft) so there really isn't all that much difference in power output.

I am not saying who is good or bad at driving down the 1320 here

I am saying a good driver with a stick, which saps less hp than an auto, will make way more of a difference than the average person might think when talking about 1/4 mile strip results.

I have seen a good stick man put a near stock weight Fox notch with only 280 to 290rwhp down the 1320 in the 12.00 to 12.10 et range more than once

It goes without saying ...... none of that stuff makes a hill of beans when talking about street conditions as track prep & slicks are not the norm for those conditions.

Never the less ... a hot shoe can really make a difference
