I have 3.27 gears in my 87 lx 5.0. Would I see a worthwhile gain going to 3.73s or 4.10s? I have the aod. I don't want the car to run too high into the r's on the freeway as I'll be driving it on there from time to time. Is there much of a performance gain switching from the 3.27s or are they all right if the car makes some power?

The way I see it a lot of it has to do with how much power your engine is putting out. When I was running stock and changed to 3.73 I loved the huge differnce they made! Now that I've added so much to my motor I have too much gear.... I have no choice but to run drag radials, or I'll be going sideways from just a light tap on the gas, which really sucks cause I'd like to run street tires and be more drivable. Not to mention what happens what happens if I get into some rainy weather....

So if you want a stronger feel the cheapest way to do it is to go with 4.10 for an aod, but if you plan on doing that motor up soon then leave the 3.27's in there and put that gear money into some heads or something!

thompson hit it right on the head. Gears add torque, but don't do squat for horsepower. 4.10's would make the most difference with your AOD, but aren't much of a highway gear IMO. 373's would really wake the car up and keep the R's a little less annoying, but if you ever find yourself up around 350HP or more, they won't be necessary anymore. What's your long term plan for the car? That's the first question you need to ask yourself, and go from there. Doing stuff twice gets old, and expensive.

Listen to Stangbear427! "Doing stuff twice gets old, and expensive." So true, so true! If only I could go back in time.....

Honestly i dont think 3.73s and 4.10s are that much of a difference, especially behind an AOD. Just run some taller tires in the back and you'll be fine.

You're not going to see a huge difference, but you will see some. Remember guys, he's going from 3.27's to 3.73's or 4.10's, not from 2.73's like most of us have. I think you'll be happy all around with either swap, but 4.10's are what I'd go with in a full weight LX. Gas mileage...yeah, it will suffer some on the highway, but it will probably get better in town. It's the price you've got to pay, if you want to play.
