I have the 2.5" Flowmaster catback on my '89 LX and the tails are starting to look really rusty and old... so I was wondering, do any of you know where I could buy some 3.5" chrome tips to have welded on? And how much would they run? I've been wanting to have this done for awhile, so let me know any ideas!

Thanks alot

You can buy them at nearly any chain autoparts store, but i highly recommend not to do this, you're not driving a honda civic. It will look like crap, part of the beauty of an lx is it's tailpipes.

Replace the tailpipes with new chrome ones.

Or get some mothers polish and spend a few hours detailing them. It's also alot cheaper than defacing the rear of your car.

Yeah, I think anything beyond 3" starts to get a little ricey myself. Anything bigger than that and you'd better have a fair bit under the hood to justify it. Not to mention it's going to affect your low end torque slightly. 3-inch is more than enought to look bad a$$ and still keep things within reason. That being said, Mac also makes 3" bolt on tails and as I said before, the quality is good.

If i were you though id consider getting 3 inch instead of 3.5 on the LX. With a Cobra Bumper i think 3.5 looks best, but with an LX bumper it looks like you have 5 inch tips. Its your call though, i dont think 3.5 would look ricey, but id go with 3 inch on an LX personally

3.5" tailpipes on a mustang make me PUKE! I have some 3" chrome Bassani tailpipes and i think they are pushing it.. havn't mounted them yet so im not sure how good they will look.

I'd stick with 2.5" man, stainless or chrome.

Well, my pipes right now are all rusty and crappy looking... so just putting tips on them would be alot more economical in the long run...

I speak from experience, some time and effort along with 10 bucks worth of supplies and they will look nearly new.

I'm personally trading my 2.5's in for 3 inchers, but i wouldnt put anything bigger on unless for some stupid reason i put a diesel in my 'stang....and since that's not happening in THIS lifetime, it'll have to wait untill i'm reincarnated into someone stupid.

That being said, the 2.5s are almost invisible under my bumper, since i welded on some short hangers for my mufflers to keep them from dragging as much, which in turn lifts up the tail pipes. They show about a half inch past the bumper, but you have to be about 25 feet away to see them from the side. Plus, a 3 inch will give you a more hollow, throaty sound than a 2.5 will, kinda like the way speaking through a cone will make your voice louder.

My wife's LX with MAC 3.5's. Sounded way better than the gay little 2.5's, and get compliments everywhere n sound and looks, never had a single person see them live and not love them. I really don't know how you could tell the difference between 3" and 3.5" without a tape measure, they look almost identicle. Noticed absolutely no difference in power or torque production with the bigger tips either, so belay the old wives tail. Bone stock 5.0 with a K&N too. I'd put them back on my GT in a heartbeat if I could snake them through the panhard easier, they were always a big hit.

Totally agree. I also have the Mac system. Made the mistake of buying it with the 2.5"s. Bad choice. Ordered the 3.5" t-pipes and sounded much better, look much better and I am much happier with it. Sold the 2.5's on e-bay and made my money back on the 3.5's. Doesen't look ricey at all.

Um... yeah? What?

Bernie - you sold your 2.5's on ebay and made out? I still have my wife's 2.5's and thought about listing them, but figured I wouldn't get anything for them so I didn't bother. Like brand new, hanging in the shed. How much did you get for them?

Yeah, but your car was used in Highway Gangbang. That's gotta affect the value.
