got the motive NEW 3.90s put in yesterday along with all new seals, bearings, shims (better adjustable ones), axle seals and bearings, etc. used Royal Purple max gear 75w90 oil with Ford Racing friction modifier. mechanic said the trac lock looked good inside along with the previous 3.55s that came out ( which whined just a little ). the car is a 95 with about 107k on it. those 3.55s were installed in 95 right after the car was bought.
i took the car down the road and it whined. drove fine but whined. i think the whine is terrible but i am anal about alot of things. seems to do it more on the deceleration especially around maybe 20mph or so. gets pretty loud.does whine some during acceleration but not bad at all. crusing at 70 its almost non existant. i was told to put about 100 miles on it and bring it back if its worse or the same. the mechanic that done the work is a stand up guy so i think he will make it right. i just dont want to pay for a gear install twice and have to buy new gears also. he said when he set them up it was hard to get the coast side and the drive side where he wanted them. like he could get one or the other but not both. in the end, i think he got both sides where they needed to be.
questions:
-just because gears whine some, does that mean you are always doing damage?
-can i drive it whining and be ok...other than being annoyed?
-if i drive it and it does do damage, does it only do damage to the ring gear and pinion? no other damage to any other bearings etc, right??
*also changed out the transmission fluid (T-5 ) from penzoil schromesh to RP Max ATF ( $9 a freakin quart ). now the trans makes more noise than it did. goes into gear fine, but not as smooth as it did before i did the fluid change. Do i need to get some run time on that also for things to work better?
thanks

However, I am suggesting it may not be so critical depending on the intensity of the whine..Still, I think it is better to be safe than sorry like most of you.
