got the motive NEW 3.90s put in yesterday along with all new seals, bearings, shims (better adjustable ones), axle seals and bearings, etc. used Royal Purple max gear 75w90 oil with Ford Racing friction modifier. mechanic said the trac lock looked good inside along with the previous 3.55s that came out ( which whined just a little ). the car is a 95 with about 107k on it. those 3.55s were installed in 95 right after the car was bought.

i took the car down the road and it whined. drove fine but whined. i think the whine is terrible but i am anal about alot of things. seems to do it more on the deceleration especially around maybe 20mph or so. gets pretty loud.does whine some during acceleration but not bad at all. crusing at 70 its almost non existant. i was told to put about 100 miles on it and bring it back if its worse or the same. the mechanic that done the work is a stand up guy so i think he will make it right. i just dont want to pay for a gear install twice and have to buy new gears also. he said when he set them up it was hard to get the coast side and the drive side where he wanted them. like he could get one or the other but not both. in the end, i think he got both sides where they needed to be.

questions:

-just because gears whine some, does that mean you are always doing damage?

-can i drive it whining and be ok...other than being annoyed?

-if i drive it and it does do damage, does it only do damage to the ring gear and pinion? no other damage to any other bearings etc, right??

*also changed out the transmission fluid (T-5 ) from penzoil schromesh to RP Max ATF ( $9 a freakin quart ). now the trans makes more noise than it did. goes into gear fine, but not as smooth as it did before i did the fluid change. Do i need to get some run time on that also for things to work better?

thanks

They were installed WRONG! Driving it will not really do damage right away but if left unattended it will do damage. Have it fixed!!!! Sounds like the pinion nut needs to be tighter. It WILL absolutly hurt the bearings over time!!

There should be NO whining from the second you pull out of the shop, if there is they were done WRONG!

kind of what i thought. i hear of plenty of people with gears that whine...motives, pro 5.0s and even fms. even the 3.55s that were installed in the car 11 years ago whined and he said those looked fine.

i like the power but havent really gotten on it yet. arent i suppose to take it easy for several 100 miles? i did have it in 4th and nailed it and the punch was def noticeable.

and i run 2300 @ 70

100% WRONG! Rear end gears should NOT whine IF set PROPERLY. What the fu ck are you talking about???

No you aren't supposed to "take it easy for a few miles". You can give it a heat cycle or two to "break in" the bearings but the gears themselves do not break in.

My 4.30's are quiet as a mouse. Why? because they were set PROPERLY

Take it back to have it PROPERLY fixed.

The crap I read on this site has gotten worse and worse as the time goes on. Good thing I found a REAL tech site to post on where BS isn't allowed

Dude, you just ran into the SAME EXACTLY situation i had last 2 weeks.

Read this thread carefully:
http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=651342

That said, the gears are NOT supposed to whine at all. The mech told me the 100 miles bull**** aswell and it's BS! Anyways, I ran maybe 1 week with the gear whine and it didn't do ANY damages at all to the internal parts. That said, I drove her pretty grand'mas style during that time. I paid for 2 gears instllations, thrust me, you dont wanna go the same route I did...

Hope it turns out better then me, mine was a daytime nightmnare...

i always thought that if they whine a little it could possibly be that the gears were not shimmed down enough and they were too tight.. maybe not?? but either way i would have them checked anyways..

I've set up tons of old Ford 9" gear sets over the years

If all parts and labor is like it should be ...........

They ought to be as quiet as that ......... Little Church Mouse

I gotta throw in with Mike on this one

I will say this however ..............

I've NEVER beat on em until after two or three heat cycles

This is news to me but glad you confirmed Grady. Consider one thing though..

"kind of what i thought. i hear of plenty of people with gears that whine...motives, pro 5.0s and even fms. even the 3.55s that were installed in the car 11 years ago whined and he said those looked fine."

This is also the shared EXPERIENCE and FACT (emphasis not shouting )of mine and of others. My BMW gears whine (new)! I had another car that had gears that whined and owned it for years. I have been in truck that had gears that whined all the time..some new ..some old..

So, how do you explain that? Again, I know the subject of gears has such an importance in the world that someone should be shot dead over it but all kidding aside, is it such a big deal if there's a little whine? I am not challenging anyone here. However, I am suggesting it may not be so critical depending on the intensity of the whine..Still, I think it is better to be safe than sorry like most of you.

p.s. I think Grady is an example to go by in that he has a lot of the right answers but doesn't seem to find the need to torch anyone. It is probably a matter of maturity but still a more enjoyable way to communicate. :SNSign:

I forgot to say the ONLY gears I had experience with were FO MO CO.

In my street cars ... I never used anything else

never the less ............

If you got PERFECT parts .............

and set em up wrong ........

the're gonna howl like a banshee

And you also have to remember, a brand new car from the factory almost always has at least 2-3 problems with it fresh of the line. And that's the bare minumum.

So brand new doesn't mean right.

You know Scott....I read this thread earlier and almost posted this........Our company bought a new CHEVY van for our local sports broadcasts and my friend and I noticed this whining and roaring and we kept telling the GM to get it checked........he never did.......so now the van is sitting in the rear of the parking lot with a bad rear end..............agreed with the "NEW IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT".....lol
