3 options for speedometer correction. which!!

Alright, i put some 4.10 gears in my manual 02 mustang gt. Now the speedometer is obviously way off and i have three choices for correction or actually four. 1. A speed calibrater $99 2. a custom chip installed by me for which a have no automotive working experience $250 3. A maxmicrotuner made by superchips $400 and 4. My local mechanic installing a custom chip for $375 (I know he's trying to rip me off, that bastard)

Remember i have no experience in this electrical wiring and dont want to mess my baby up. And i dont really know the difficulty in installing these things. the safest and most efficient thing IMO is to get the Max micro tuner because i wont need to reburn a chip if i decide to go back to 87 octane for money reasons or make my gears higher. And ive heard about speed cals dieing after 2-3 years.

However i consider myself to be a fast learner and i also have a good amount of patients. But when my ****ing odometer is about 50 miles off one day after intallation its kinda hard to have patience.

I'm no wizard on this but I'd say speecal is the best bet.

I did the speedcal from Brothers. It took me about 1 hour to install in my garage with basic hand tools. I'd say for the money it is the way to go, unless you plan on getting the dynotune later, In which case just get the chip and the tune.

i'll be doing the speecal also when I do my gears because my local shop isn't set up for SCT chips and ECU reflashes yet. And I don't want to waste money only adjusting 1 aspect of my cars computer..because I can't afford 91 gas right now.

I think T&J performance offers a reflash of the computer just for the gears for 99 bucks as well.

This is where you need to consider other mods that you plan on doing to your car. If you want to add a 180 degree thermostat the chip might be a better way to go. If you plan on getting an off road h or x pipe the chip is definately the way to go.

The chip will:
a) correct for your gears
b) lower your fan operating temp to match the new thermostat
c) Kill the rear 02 sensors to prevent check engine light (needed with off road h or x pipe)
c) give you at least another 10 hp

Keep in mind that you have to inform your chip supplier of these mods so that he can correctly burn your chip.

I'm only advising this route because I did the gears, bought the speedcal, got an off road h pipe, got MIL eliminators (gets rid of check engine light) and then later on had a custom chip burned for my car which made the speedcal and MIL eliminators a waste of money.

If you can find a friend that has some experience installing a chip you'll save a few bucks.

If you don't plan on going mod crazy then just get the speedcal and be done with it.

What kind of chip are you getting for the $375 (option #4)? Might not be such a rip off...The (fairly) new Superschips SCT custom chip retails for $325.00, but like any good custom chip, it really needs to be dyno-tuned to realize it full potential. Ck out www.superchipscustom.com . I have this chip and like it for the potential it has, but I have also just added some induction pieces and need to go back to my installer to have it re-tuned - $$$. Hopefully though it will be worth an additional 10 - 15 RWHP with proper tuning. My 02 runs fine with just installing these parts right out of the box, but would really like to have it tweaked. And unless you have access to a dyno to really see what's going on, you're just guessing, IMO...there's my 2 cents! Best of Luck!

Unless you have future needs for the chip have T&J Performance reflash your ECU for $100.

Plus adjust shift firmness on an auto, and advance the timing for premium fuel.

I don't know about '99 and up (or what you have), but on my '98 GT Autologic chip, I still had to get a SpeedCal per Lidio . I kept chewing up 23 tooth gears and it was still off by 10 mph before the SpeedCal.
