i am getting really close to driving my mustang and need some help.

i recently bought a remanufactured c4 from autozone, it was orignally a 71. by the way its all in a 1968 mustang notch back

the orignal problem: the gear slector lever mounted on the transmission, was pointed up (mustangs should be down) it came with instructions, that if need be, remove the valve body and remove the slector shaft, and position the way it needs to be.

i bought a new shift rod connecting linkage, aligned the teeth with the valve, postioned the kick down lever, and bolted up the valvebody. it goes threw the gears, but when you try to put in park, it rubs on the transmission cross member, but it aligns with the last gear tooth but not with the console letter "P"

THE BIG PROBLEM: with the drive line connected, put in netural, IT WONT MOVE... so i jacked up the rear, tires spin, so its not the brakes. i rotate the crank by hand, it moves, but the drive line does not.

PLEASE, ALL KNOWING MUSTANG OWNERS...HELP:hail2:

There are two different shift levers for a C4, one that points up and one that points down. They are welded so you cannot just turn them over. You have to use the right one for you linkage, or improvise.

TCI and some others sell a universal lever. You cut the lever off the shaft and this bolts on, and could go either up or down. Or you could try a cable shifter, and just change the direction the cable attaches. 82's had a cable stock.

All of mine are in Foxes, with no clearance probs to the crossmember, but yours sounds like a misadjust prob.

If you have the orig trans, study how it was set up.

The adjustment method is to disconnect the rod or cable from the trans lever, and set the console shifter lever in the car to drive. Then, with the console shift lever gently held in drive, and to the rear, connect and adjust the rod or cable so that it and the trans are both in drive. Then check that it goes to all other gears.

Also, it is REALLY easy to get the kickdown lever misaligned with the valve in the tranny when you install the valvebody. This will cause odd things, like you have. I now always check both the kickdown movement and shifter movement before I fill it.

You may have to drop the pan and valvebody and check it and re align them.

Filled one 3 times one day.....
