The EGR gasses should be inert.

it puts burnt gases into the intake, thus lowering combustion temperatures. weird eh? if you still have cats it may be hard on them but just for the sake of diagnostics try the beer can out, worst comes to worst you just have drink a beer, terrible huh?

Ron, please explain a little more about the relationship between EGR and cats - I'm not following but am always up for a little education. I tend to think of the two systems as completely separate and unrelated.

egr works with a 3 way convertor to lower nox emissions. 3 way: platinum, palladium, and rhodium.(scrap guys justa bout want to steal them outta parked cars.) anyways the platinum/palladium is in all cats. the rhodium is the third part in a 3 way. the rhodium is what lowers nox, the others lower hc and co(hydrocarbons/raw gas, and carbon monoxide) i could be wrong but running with a 3way cat and no egr could possibly burn out the rhodium in the cat thereby making smog testing more of a PITA. thats it for class, time for a beer.

thx. Well i didn't block the egr ports at the intake because i have an issue with a nut and the stud. so i disconnected the pipe that feeds it and installed a round beer can seal in that.

the hardest part of that job is carefully emptying the contents of the beer can, it can be done with a lot of concentration. you could have asked for help on that part.

you using a K&N filter on it? if so clean your MAF. The oil from the filter gets on the MAF little wire thing, dirt gets on the wire and insulates it, therefore incoming air is not read properly which leads to hesitation and over all running like ****.

Yes there is a K&N filter but it is in a f-150 which is a Speed density setup. so its not an issue with a MAF. Thanks for the info however.
