Is there anyone here using one of those blocks? I remember reading that there rated at 550 Hp. Thats not much more then a production block. I have heard of guys making 600-650 RWHP with them though? But unknown for how long.

DSS is nothing but a stock block fully machined for a stroker and what not. Its not even in the same planet as compared to a dart block.

How much power are you looking to make?

You could probably get away with a Sportsman block. It would be better to have an R though so you have some room if you want to up boost later.

Same as others told you don't waste your money on a sportsman block, they are only marginally stronger than stock. The only people i know of that run them are circletrack guys, thats only because thats what the rules allow and they only make about 380 HP in LMSC trim. Get a Dart or R block or just stock up on factory shortblocks and keep one beside your spare tire.

A bud of mine has one makes in the 550rwhp range and went 10.7's with no probs. If your looking for 600-700 I'd def. go straight for a Dart or R block.

You can never tell with blocks. Just because someone did something with his doesnt mean you can. I'm making 516 at the wheels with a factory block, but thats why I am dropping the boost down to 10 lbs. A sportsman block is nothing more than some thicker webbing and hipo 289 main caps, THATS IT!! Do yourself a favor and either get a 351 based engine, save up and get a real block, or tone down your tune. You could probably drive around all day on a stock block but take it to the track and hook and your done. Its also a bad sign when they lower the power rating of the block because it was failing at the previous rated. I'm actually making more power with my stock block then what they rate for the Sportsman block.

How are the DSS level 10 or 20 blocks, once my engine goes(which may be a while) i plan on dropping in a 306 super pro bullet, with a level 20, and eventually a hp turbo kit, hoping to make 700-800 as a daily driver. So i need a strong block, would a level 20 DSS work?

On the level 20 DSS blocks...If you go beyond the effective operating range of a load bearing unit, it will fail. Hocus pocus won't do it. They're likely doing some type of cryogenic treatment which will indeed make a definite improvement, but it just REDUCES the number of defects in the block. The block is still limited by its material properties and design flaws. The sad part is, there are plenty of people out there who actually believe in DSS shortblocks and main girdles. Some good friends of mine, actually my buddy and his dad, were suckered into believing in and buying a DSS 306 shortblock with a main girdle and all their other top-secret b-strengthening goodies.
I told him the block will crack down the lifter valley whether or not he has a girdle on there or not. He just told me to go and research DSS and the special wall-strengthening process they run these stock blocks through.

Oh well.. what can ya do?

Other alternatives are a Dart sprortsman block and a Ford Racing A4 block, which has been discontinued and replaced with the newer R302 block.

This might be of some help..very informative
