I'm looking for information on those who've gone from 302 to 331, or even a read up about it.

Thanks :SNSign:

My brother did it last summer. He builds engines everyday for his job, so he knows what he's doing. Ten years ago, he built a 306 with ported & polished '69 351W heads (with Chevy valves), a solid lifter camshaft and a dual quad setup. His tranny was a T-5 and the rearend was an 8.8 with a Detroit Locker setup and 4.30 gears. That combination was good for consistent 12.50's @ 108-109 and a best of 12.49 @ 110. It's power output was 311 rwhp and 287 rwt.

Last summer, he ordered a D.S.S. 331 rebuild kit and installed it into a .060 over 302 block, creating a 337 cubic inch monster. Combined with AFR 185's, an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold and a Holley 650, the car picked up 78 more horsepower. He's now making 387 rwhp and 362 rwt and the car runs consistent 11.60's @ 117-118 mph, with the same rear gears (he also upgraded the T-5 to a Tremec 3550.)

That extra 78 horsepower gave him 8 more 10ths in the quarter mile and 10 more miles per hour. It's the reason I'm now saving my money for a stroker!

You mean 387, not 287?

I personally like the 331 much better than the 347. The 331 doesn't put as much pressure on the bottoms of the cylinder walls as the 347. In my own opinion, the 331 is a much more reliable choice. The 347 may make a little more hp, but the longevity may be comprimised.

Thanks guys. It is 387 rwhp. I usually try to review my posts before I hit the submit button and overlooked that one (the most important number!)

Hissing Cobra, I'm usually not a fan of the four eyed cars, but your's will definitly make you think about owning one. That is a sharp car.

I have a block thats going to be a 331 as well. Not sure on the rotating assembly yet. But actually looking at DSS site you can get a complete shortblock for a few hundred more than a decent rotating assembly, so I might just go that route.

Im about to pick up some 95 Cobra heads (GT40's) and get them ported and rebuilt. Ill be using a Cobra Intake. Not sure on the cam yet though.

Id like to make around 300+hp to the wheels.

i went with the dss forged 331 setup on my stock block. that was fully machined w/ all the tricks like screw in freeze plugs blah blah. i even went with the dss windage tray and main support. i'm def pleased with how it turned out much more power and no problems after over 3000 dd miles including a couple long road trips. i have not got it to a dyno yet or back to the track but hope to soon. was def a good choice.

I'm throwing around the idea of doing it next year, then doing H/C/I after. And hoping I can get around the ball park of 300. Than add a zex kit to finish her up.

My overall goal is to be around 350-400 when I'm done.

After breaking the stock 302 I went with the DSS 331 level 20 race prep block and it seems good, holding up on the power I'm making and many road trips to the tune of 15K miles.

Made me really start to think my project a bit.

With a H/C/I and the rite components with a good tune you should net 320 RWHP.

A 100 shot of the good stuff should put you a little over your goal.

Yeah, I'm thinking this might be my best bang for the buck.

I just finished mine, still breaking it in. Feels *very* strong and I haven't even really mashed the pedal yet...breaks the tires loose with about 1/2 pedal. I'd definitely recommend it

Very cool.

About how long was the install and the price tag, if you don't mind me asking?

I took my time since this was my first time doing it. I definitely put in the hours on stangnet researching all of the potential problems and how to avoid them.

It took me about 8 months, but about 4 moths of that was just waiting for the time to do it. If I had time to work on it every day for a few hours, it would have taken a few months.

I got a really great deal on a short block from M&R Engines ($1,500). I probably sank another 3-4K into it with new clutch, flywheel, balancer, intake, heads, rockers, headers, MAF conversion, paint, tools, gaskets, oil pump, and other supplies.

I got the GT-40 heads and intake from a '93 cobra and had them ported, paid about $1,000 for everything.

You could definitely do it for cheaper if you don't need to replace the clutch or already have a decent set of heads.

I'm still running the stock TB until I can afford a nice accufab
