Hi everyone, I have a 302 and I am installing a set of 351 DOOE heads with procomp 1.6 roller rockers. I am wondering if I will need to put different size pushrods in or if any other mods are needed to make this combo work. Will I notice a hp increase over the stock 85 302 heads? Any and all help and advice is welcome.

Thanks, Jesse

yes ....most likely.Best way to know for sure is get an adjustable pushrod and a lash adjuster and dummy the valvtrain up and make sure the lash adjusters reads the same or close as possible to the advertised lift @50. You also want to make sure that the roller stays in the center area of the valve tip and does not wonder to close to the edges....pushrod lengths can sway this. If the heads have been milled at all then its an automatic YES YOU WILL NEED DIFFERENT PUSHRODS. Do the heads have any work done to them? YES, you will notice a huge difference....my c9 heads (same as D0) Carried my car to 11.18 @ 123 on the sauce.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I dont think they have had any mill work, just ported and polished with a valve job, new springs, guides and procomp 1.6 rollers. So you think the stock push rods will work? I just bought these heads off a guy who switched to gt-40s. I got the heads with everything stated above, a set of 9mm ford racing wires, a ford racing oil pan, polished powered by ford valve covers, and the ARP bolt kit to install the heads for $440. So I think I did ok on the deal with the heads just having been reworked. I put them on the motor, but the push rods wont slide throught the guide plate because there is a spot on the pushrod that has a piece of metel wrapped around it that says "up"on it ???? I have never seen this before, should I just go buy a new set of stockers. Or is there a link that will walk me through the process of how to measure the pusrod lenght????

Thanks, Jesse

hmmmm that "up" is a new one to me. I do not know of any sites that would walk you through measuring for pushrods? But someone definetly will here. The only thing i can tell you is to slide the stock pushrods in and measure the movement via lash adjuster at the valve tip

It's always a good idea to check the length. I had a 351W in an '83 that i traded another 'stang for...the guy built the engine....i later found that he used pushrods that were too LONG, and when i tried to fire up the engine, the valves smashed into the pistons...the engine was a complete loss more or less.

Also remember to get some good hardened pushrods if you use guideplates.
