I recently bought a 93 Cobra, the car had a Paxton Novi 2000, the blower is gone but the #42 pounders are still in place. I spoke to a guy here in PA who will do a single turbo setup, Parts and labor for $2500 and then another $350 for a tune. Im pulling the motor out beforehand, going to have it torn down, everything checked, and re-assembld with new gaskets and bearings. I want to make sure it can handle 8-10 psi of boost, with no blown headgaskets. Anyone else running a turbo? I was debating if I should keep the 42's or drop back to 24's or 30 pounders. I'm going to run the stock GT-40 heads and Cobra Intake until I can add a trickflow unit and AFR heads. The car is parked now, with the 42's it's washing down cylinder walls making the oil thin, so it'll sit till it goes in for the turbo. Any comments or suggestions are welcome

I don't understand why 42# injectors would cause the problem your describing. Without boost, you should be able to tune the injectors down to compensate for their added size. Maybe you just need a tune because it's running too rich. If not, you've got some other problem. Turbo cars running 42s at idle and cruise are no different than your car is with them. I'm putting 160# injectors in my 331 and at low rpm out of boost, that's way more injector than needed. Granted, I'm running an BS3 engine management system. Plenty of other cars run 42s without the same problem, though. I would definitely suggest not wasting money to buy 24s or 30s if you plan to turbo your mustang. You'll be making upwards of 400 rwhp at 10 psi, and 42s will be great for that.

FWIW, while tearing the motor down won't hurt, you should be more than able to handle 8-10 psi on the stock block. If it's already having problems of some sort, that's a different story, otherwise save yourself time and money. The most important part of the installation is the tune.

Oh and $2500 for a full turbo kit is a damn good deal. Find a customer he's done one for before and ask him about it, otherwise caveat emptor...

I would definately keep the 42's for the turbo kit. If you are getting cylinder wash with them now chances are you have a tune problems or you have leaking injectors. I would check the injectors out but you won't want to go any smaller if you stick with boost. I would definately check out what kind of parts are used with the turbo kit. The price definately seems low for parts and labor.

here is what I know...he uses all new parts on his turbo kit except the shorty headers he buys used. I spoke to 2 guys who used his kits, one has a stock 95 GT, the car makes 450/470 on the dyno. My main concern is longevity. Update on the injectors...I had a friend tell me the car was washing down the cyl walls, however, I pulled the dipstick and i see and smell no gas in the oil. the car idles, and drives fine, it's only when you floor it, the cars falls on face until the rpm's reach the 3K mark.

Then you need to tune the car... This "washing" down the cylinder walls might be something to concern yourself about only if your car is running so rich it's smoking. It wouldn't be good for lubrication, but your piston rings are designed specifically to keep contaminants out of the oil. There's only a problem if they're not doing their job.

What are the particulars of this turbo kit? Perhaps if you could provide some detail, we would be able to give you some insight as to what you're getting into. And, fwiw, I think $2500 is a completely feasible price to install a turbo kit.... a great deal, but definitely feasible, but in the end you get what you pay for.

$2500 is not for the install. its parts AND labor! thats almost unheard of.

i'd be damn sure to find out exactly what kit he's planning on installing. i have heard nothing but bad stories about the cheapo ebay turbo kits, which could cost around that much alone for parts, so for install to be included, i'd be quite weary...
i dont have any tubo experience, but i've been creeping around these forums long enough to have seen many bad reviews of cheap turbo's. just my 2c.

i don't know what your budget is, but a turbo mustang is the ****!!! i think a decent setup might run you around the $5000 mark for parts, but it can swing a fair bit depending on the kind of deal you get. if you got a little extra $$$, (which i sure don't) get a turbo!!!!! a good s/c can cost almost $4000.....

I would suggest a centrifugal style blower over the KB, in the long run you will not be happy with the KB set-up, the lower intake choice is very, very limiting as you try to make more power.

I'm with the others $2500 is way cheap, the Hellion kits are top notch but they are near double that price. You can tune the 42# down, although the pulse width and spray pattern will be less then ideal, but they will be perfect with boost.
