Yes, a trac loc from a F250 will work because they have 31 spline axles.
Or, you could go with a Power Trax locker part #PWT-92-0688-3127.
With the PT you'll remove the inner spider gears, 'S' spring and clutch plates from the trac loc and replace them with a 31 spline ratcheting locker set.
Someone here has done this and seemed very pleased with the results.
You will need access to a press and bearing seperater to remove and install the ABS cogged ring off the stock axle onto the new axle.
Yes you will need a new trac-loc/diff...If your rear end is completely stock and you want to do 31 spline axles Its best to pick the new diff you want (trac-loc, eaton , aubern, torsen, spool, whatever), get the ring and pinion you want also. Switching splines on the axles requires taking everything apart back there so its best to get the diff, and gears you want and be done with it (labor will be the same). But yea if you plan on doing htis yourself you will need to learn how to shim the diff and you will need some special tools for that. Some of the guys do it themselves but most just get it done. It's pretty tricky and it sucks when you dont get it right (you'll know when you go out for the first drive) and have to take everything apart again.
Not to scare you away from it but it should be known.
Depending on your application...me I roadrace the car, no 5000 rpm slick launches here...I decided to go with 28 spline upgraded axles. There still much stronger than stock be not as good as 31 spline. So thats another option.
Someone beat me to it...As far as the abs rings its recommended to get new ones. There a biach to get off without breaking them or distorting them. There really not meant ro be reused. Gotta go to a dealer to get them unfortunately. I can get you a part number if needed....
You can get a trac-lok from any F-Series with the 8.8 rear. My dad's '90 F-250 has the 10.25, but my '95 F-150 has the 31 spline trac-loc, so I'm not sure what trucks have what rear end.
thanks for all the replies guys... i need to do gears and my track experience friday night let me know my trac loc needs to be replaced shes getting weak...and since im going to be pumping some huge cubes through the car i figured i should do the rear right ..right now when it needs it ...and i want to be able to run slicks
so i need the axels
abs rings from the dealer
trac loc unit
and other misc. small parts.(shims/lube/ other)
so would 600 be a good guess to put away for this upgrade?
i have a good friend thats a good mechanic that will do all the work so i dont need to factor in labor ...i can take care of that im looking into parts only...so does that sound too low? too high? or about correct?
