I have a dumb axle question. I know that my car comes with 28 spline axles stock. I would like to put a set of Superior axles in. I was looking at the 31 spline ones that are 3/4 inch wider than stock. This would aid in fitting some bigger tires and be an improvement over stock. What is invloved in the switch? What should I look out for?

Being wider, you'd have to worry about rubbing on the outside of the wheel well instead of the inside. You can accomodate that a little by rolling the lip, but there does come a point where that doesn't help.

You do realize you need to change the limited slip as well right? I know, maybe a dumb question to ask but I wasn't sure if you knew. Is the car lowered at all?

You can probably get 28 or 31 or 33 spline axles in any length you want. There is no magic in the length of 31 spline or others.

Old T-bird 7.5 axles are longer than stock Mustangs, and stick further out of the housing. Both cars used the same width housing, but the T bird was wider. They had some funky brake drums with an offset (outward) center portion to fit over the axle endes, and locate the wheels, while using the brakes in the inboard position. Didn't beleive it until I got one.

Not a dumb question...I was not sure if I had to change the carrier or not. I did not think I could just swap the axles, but wanted to be sure. I run 275 drag radials, and they rub a little. I would like to add some strength to the axles, and maybe get some taht are a little longer so I do not have to run wheel spacers. Wheel spacers make me nervous. Any thoughts? Yes the car is lowered about an inch.

Well I would get out the ole measuring tape and see where you are at. I know a 275 on these cars can be a tight fit with the correct backspacing. Maybe just order some stock length axles and remove your quad shocks. You might need some new control arms to help with the wheel hop but you are heading that way anyhow.

I just put on MM lower control arms, and removed the quads. It seems to launch harder, but I have not gone to the track yet. I am going on the 23rd.
